Who’s the best footballer you’ve seen play for the team you support?

When we used to watch Hereford United in League Two, they had a player called Mathieu Manset who got his own nickname, The Beast. Big bloke with great ball control, he could dribble through defences like a knife through butter and barge them legally when needed. Surprised he never went more big time.

I'm not fussed about fancy players, as a central defender myself I'm going for Martin Keown, a real nasty fucker. Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry also get an honourable mention.

My dad was a Man Utd fan so I've also watched Best, Charlton & Law etc in their heydays.

Henry was unreal mate the best footballer I’ve seen play at the SOL he even got around of applause from the whole crowd due to his performance and has praised the Sunderland fans in the past

Keown was a proper old school defender the type I love to see

We’ve got a version of him he’s called Brobbey and he’s a unit I don’t think there is one defender in the whole league that can deal with him when it comes to pushing him off the ball he literally bullies defenders 😁

Beast was great in his day. It sometimes felt like he had the ball on an elastic band attached to his feet when he attacked a defence. And the Meadow End at Edgar Street would all start off with the Beast chant and hammering on the doors when he went on a charge.

Love it mate 😁

Brobbey is very much like that the ball just sticks to his feet when he holds it up I actually seen him hold off 3 defenders at one time turn away from them and run with the ball his power is power is just unreal no defender has the strength to deal with him it’s a great thing to witness 😁

All that said, Manset didn't really carve out much of a career post-Hereford. It's possible most of the oppositions we got flattered him and he'd never have cut it as a Prem player. He wasn't the most consistent but he did look great when he was on one.

Forest have always had some great players and as a lad watched many times with my Uncle the truly great Cloughie era, and later, of so many legends, where to even begin?

But the best had to be the great John Robertson, God bless.

Devastating, poetry in motion.

Lomana Lualua was probably the one that gave me the most joy as a kid. Helped he came through as a kid with us.

Kevin Lisbie was another joy, and his kid has been good for us so far

Kenny was brilliant, Scotland had a fantastic team in the 70’s and should have done so much better than they did.

Super Kev was brilliant mate 👌 him and Quinny were unplayable on their day and caused even the best defences problems

A outstanding buy by Reidy especially considering were he came from and the price we payed for him

Costa Blanca Spain..

Only players I have seen live.

I saw the Holy Trinity (Charlton/Best/Law) and Cantona in his pomp. Keane and Scholes would be up there as would Cristiano Ronaldo.

But the best ever? Well he just was the Best, even in name.

I would give a special mention to a player that not many have heard of. But no less than Jimmy Greaves hailed him as the best he'd ever seen. Tony Green. I saw him a few times in his Blackpool days.

I wonder if anybody had seen the great John Charles in his day?

Often overlooked in best ever player polls but those in the know would say probably the most complete player ever from the British Isles and up there with the best in the world.

As a Bradford fan not many to mention but we had Chris Waddle briefly back end of his career. Ever time he played he was head and shoulders above everyone else. Highlight was him scoring direct from a corner in a derby with Huddersfield.

Pure ballers Id go for Sir Trev and Paolo Di Canio.

My hero though is Billy Bonds.

Ultimate professional, fit as a butchers dog, hard as nails, died on that pitch every week and he was a better footballer than he was given credit for.

and was West ham to his core.

My personal favourite was Frank Munro, just a sublime defender, at a time when I was an impressionable youngster.

However recently, Ruben Neves was special, as was Joao Moutihno.

But probably the greatest I saw was Peter Knowles, who cut his career short to become a Jehovahs Witness. Unbelievable talent, though I was a young kid, it was impossible not to see how good he was.

Thame/Aylesbury

The original question was for the best player you’ve ever seen for the team you support.

Therefore as a Chelsea fan, I’m going to say George Best.

He played for Chelsea at Peter Osgood’s testimonial, I was 15.

It was late 70s, and Bestie was still fit and very fast.

Extremely tricky too, he ran Dave Webb ragged in defence.

In the week leading up to it nobody was sure whether or not George would turn up, given his unreliable nature at that time.

Him and Ossie were great mates though, and my word, George really turned up.

A night I’ll never forget.

For my team it’s a difficult choice but I will name three.

Gary Shaw - injury denied the Villa and England of one of the greatest strikers ever to play the game. For a couple of seasons he was lethal. RIP Gary

Paul McGrath aka God. The best defender that I have seen in over 50 years of watching football. He read the game so well and he didn’t have much pace but he was able to anticipate the play before everyone else.

Super John McGinn, a modern-day Villa great. He is an inspirational captain and we are not the same side without him in it. If he lifts silverware in May his legendary status will be sealed.

Without doubt, both for his work on the pitch and off it. He held the club together in '89 and the family have raised over 20m for cancer treatment/research.
