To those who are claiming that it was a free vote:-Technically MPs cannot be forced to vote in the legal sense, but this is not a free vote!

The motion is subject to a three-line whip, meaning Labour MPs are instructed to vote with the Government or face disciplinary action, including suspension of the whip, if they defy it.

The Times reported that senior cabinet ministers and Starmer allies spent Monday phoning Labour MPs who had privately warned they might not back him, because the vote is being treated as a confidence issue in his leadership.

In Parliamentary terms, whipping applies direct party pressure with career consequences for disobedience, so describing it as a democratic free vote does not reflect how the system actually operates.

Not voting can be interpreted in any which way and will be by politicians.

Labour win by 1 vote: “Yes, we only held on by 1 vote, but the turnout was a dismal 20% and it’s common for mid-term election blues, our voters stayed at home and will come out for us at a General Election…” etc.

If you can’t bring yourself to vote for any of your local candidates, write exactly that on your ballot paper. Write in None Of The Above. Make your feelings clear about the candidates next to each one. Draw a big penis on your ballot paper. Be creative! Spoilt ballot papers are much more fun than you not voting at all. They get added to the official statistics for turnout. And people get to see them at the count. The agents and often candidates themselves have to have sight of these so the returning officer can demonstrate why he/she is discounting them as valid votes. The counters at the tables will read what you have said.

I’ve been a candidate and an election agent in my time and spoilt ballot papers were often the highlight.

You vote for an MP. That MP is usually a member of a ‘team’. It’s not irrational to understand that a member of a team will play the way the team expects, and definitely not to go against the team. That’s absolutely acceptable.

What it says about me is that I know what’s going on and I’m not going to cry like a baby when it happens.

Nor will I when the winning team decides what’s going on even if they weren’t the ones I personally chose.

Too many people are like children and throw their toys out of the pram when things aren’t going exactly how they thought they should.

"How disgusting our Labour Government is. Forcing there members to vote for Starmer as opposed to a democratic free vote nobody is forcing anyone to vote for Sir Kier Starmer."

There was a 3 line whip which effectively bullies MPs to vote on party lines. 14 defied it completely and voted with the opposition. Also a substantial number abstained. With Labour's enormous majority there wasn't a snowball in hell's chance of the government being defeated even if rattled.

Rumour has it that Sir Keir is considering bringing Ms Rayner back into government to try and ward off a leadership challenge.

The SW1 organ-grinders in No. 10 and the Whips' Office may suppress discontent amongst Labour MPs, but voters will speak in the crucial poll on 7th May, which will reveal the electorate’s view of Starmer more so than their support for other parties, with strong tactical voting at work. The Ukrainian rent-boy arsonist case proceeds under reporting restrictions, while the Met slowly sifts the Mandelson affair with a fine-tooth comb. Restoring disgraced Rayner to the Cabinet is just shifting a rolling cannonball. Let’s see how slippery Keir handles these crises. His sizzling sausages may well return!

You expect the Conservatives to vote against everything the government does. It's what the official opposition does. Labour spent the entire fourteen years [2010 -2024] voting against the then government. Occasionally there is a consensus. Other minor parties decide for themselves. Reform do what the great Nigel tells them.

The main reason why Starmer will probably survive is because there is no natural successor in parliament today. Streeting has been looked upon as the 'heir apparent' but he is tainted with the Mandelson scandal. At the moment Angela Rayner seems to be the most likely replacement and she horrifies a good many Labour MPs as well as the country as a whole.
