I know exactly how you feel, only 18 months ago I was 4 stone bigger than I am now and nobody was interested, since losing the weight and now being pretty trim I get quite a lot of attention. I think it definitely depends on your chosen age group, used to get a lot of attention from much older guys which I'm just not into. Now I get attention from the younger guys which I am into.

Lots of people will say it doesn't matter and there is someone for everyone, but having lived it I know what you are saying is true, people are fickle and have their preference, and most preferences aren't for bigger guys.

I'm not saying you should change who you are for others, I didn't do it for other people, I did it for my health and own self image as I wasn't happy with myself.
