"Spancil hill by any decent singer

"

It's such a beautiful air and evocative lyrics.

One of the first proper Irish events I went to when I lived in Co Clare for a few years was the horse fair. Smaller and more authentic than the big one in Ballinasloe. One of the moments that reminded me I really was in a different country with different priorities and a different way of life from England.

Whispering Pines - The Band. Richard Manuel at his lonesome best on one of the great records that defy classification or fashion.

All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix. The only guitar solo that really matters and the greatest cover version of all time.

Days - Television. From their criminally underrated second album and one of the greatest melodic guitar motifs ever (that's not a solo)

Supersonic - Oasis. From when they were good. Derivative yeah but not giving a shit and making something magical from lairy working class irony humour.

For N-S balance: For Tomorrow - Blur. Britpop does The Kinks and possibly exceeds them. Brilliant harmonies and arrangement.

Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles. Could have picked literally anything off Revolver, beyond a doubt the greatest pure pop album of all time, but this is mastery of writing and arranging and production. Strings have never sounded better before or since.

Gymnopedie Number Three - Erik Satie. Over the far better known #1. This one has that quality where the opening chords set up the melancholy atmosphere and the first note of the melody breaks your heart. Like Whispering Pines above, a tune I cannot listen to under any sort of influence because my eyes immediately tear up and I make a mess of my face.

Number eight, tricky to limit a list to just eight. Something cheery and lightweight. Hey Mr Spaceman - The Byrds.

And the object I take: my much gigged Stratocaster (1988 USA made so not with the cachet of the 50s or 60s Fenders but an utterly fantastic, evolved and fucking perfect electric guitar).

My book: The Drowned World by JG Ballard. Simply the best post-apocalypse novel ever written.
