In seriousness, just ask any chemist for the stuff to get rid of em. Might be a red faced moment, but they've heard it all a thousand times. Failing that pop into your local clinic and get a full check up at the same time.

Crabs are awkward to handle, when I were a lad, in the far West of Cornwall as it happens, we used to get freshly caught crabs from the fishing bay along the coast and bring them back in a bucket to be cooked. Buggers were always trying to climb out of the bucket as we walked along. No elastic bands to keep the claws closed, more than once we got nipped.

You need to get them treated. Your doctor can give you a prescription. You might be lucky and get a sympathetic pharmacist. But these days it’s unlikely.

Crabs do not “just go away” ( one excuse I’ve heard). They live in the hair follicle. Even if you shave they will still be there. If you have hair elsewhere, they will be there. They have evolved in parallel with humans so much that they can only really grip onto pubic hair. Not the hair on your head. But they can live on your eye lashes. So get them treated as soon as. If they do make it to your eye lashes that’s a different treatment altogether.

You also need to change your bedding and your clothes. And wash them at 60 degrees. Look at the NHS website for full information. And start being responsible about your sex life.

Derbac M, over the counter from a pharmacy, if you're worried about saying you have crabs, just say it's for kids nits - not that they give a shit anyway

Derbac is ok if you live alone

You have to leave it on your body for sometime and it stinks

Lyclear cream - not the one for kids’ hair knits - is better for discreet treatment

Sexual Health NHS person here - You'll need an actual topical agent. Lyclear is the most available brand in the UK. Wash all bedding, towels and clothes on at least 50°C wash and do the same again in 2 weeks. Any rugs, carpets or plush cushions, sofas and mattress should be vacuumed too - repeat on 2 weeks again.

"Any ideas for safe, effective remedies? (Asking for a friend)."

Permethrin or Derbac M. Both can be bought over the counter. Wash bedding and towels on a hot wash 60°C and high heat dry for 20-40 minutes, or seal in a vacuum bag for 1-2 weeks if you can not machine wash certain items.

I caught them on my lower legs clearing out an ex whole house for a landlord friend many years ago!

I went to the local chemist and they gave me a cream, she laughed when I told her what I thought had happened but said she did believe me because of the location on my legs and not higher up, another few days and things could have been much worse.

Surely most people wash bedding & towels, vacuum carpets more often than every two weeks?

The eggs don't!

Apart from I'd not been anywhere else to catch them and it was only a few on my lower legs, they hadn't moved north before I spotted them.

It's not unusual in that type of work.

All medicines dispensed by a sexual health clinic are free. As others have said get yourself a full check up and the lotion for free. It can be daunting going to a clinic for the first time but they are totally unfazed by anything. They’ll have heard it all a thousand times before.

Contrary to a previous poster, shaving does actually help and can eliminate them - particularly if you're fairly smooth and dont have extensive body hair.

In fact, the trend for shaved public has seen a massive drop in the number of cases of crabs.

But obviously its absolutely the best and responsible thing to do it get some treatment from the pharmacist.

Believe me they dont give a s**t and see it every day.

Re towels rugs etc etc.

I understand the wash in hot water (plus 50 or plus 60) would a few days in a freezer also be effective?

I was thinking pillows and cushions.

Sexual health clinic will give you same.

Pharmacy have seen it all before.

They all sell it.

Leave on for 24 hours. Wash off

Repeat in week later.

If on chest more likely to be lice.

Same treatment.

Even if you shave you will still get them.they go into root.

Anything that can’t be washed at 60 degrees (either too delicate or impractical) can go in the freezer for 48 hours. Crabs are easier to get rid of than scabies as you can see the black specks. Scabies mites are much smaller so don’t cut corners getting rid of those. Strip the bed completely and then vacuum the mattress to within an inch of its life. If you’ve got a spare bed sleep in that for three or four days and then give it the same treatment. The itching with scabies is actually an allergic reaction to the mites’ shit. So once you’ve applied the lotion don’t be disheartened if the itching carries on for a few days afterwards, the mite burrows under the skin and so it’s shit will still be there after it’s been killed. Use something to help with the process of exfoliation - obviously not a yard brush in delicate areas!

For scabies, current medical guidance generally suggests that while bedding, towels and recently worn clothes should be washed at 60°C at the time of treatment, excessive environmental cleaning (e.g. obsessively vacuuming mattresses and furniture) is usually unnecessary, as scabies spreads mainly through prolonged skin-to-skin contact rather than via the environment. It is true, however, that itching can persist for some time after successful treatment due to the ongoing allergic reaction to mite debris remaining in the skin.

Read the correct information on the NHS site. Shaving does not get rid of crabs. They live in the hair follicle itself.

If anyone is concerned about any health issues the NHS site will give you correct information.

What sort of judgmental and ignorant shit is this?!

Pharmacists want to sell you products. They’re not interested in judging you for what you buy and for what condition. That’s completely in somebody’s head.

Public lice do NOT live in the hair follicles. They do not burrow into the skin. This is either confusion with scabies or ignorance.

And why does catching crabs mean someone is being irresponsible in their sex life?! They’re a close-contact transmission parasite not an STD. You can catch them without having sex.

This sort of response is exactly why you should avoid asking these questions to random anonymous men on the internet.
