Sitting is the only sure fire way and even then as someone else said depending on the cage type you have to angle things to prevent inadvertently spray.

The other thing I have found is once you have finished it can be tricky catching all the drips or preventing secondary drips - with open cages have found that screwing the toilet paper up and sliding it between the bars helps and then sitting on the toilet lid to coax any residual drips out
