I've unplugged my telly in the spare room so it's not one of those energy vampires. Can't do much more than maybe put my fridge freezer on a timer to switch it off for 12hrs a day.

I just try and build up my credit during the summer so I can burn thru it in winter.

Try to reduce usage of electricity or switch on only during the cheap period.

Electricity more expensive than gas. Use gas to boil water instead of using electricity.

Use a rechargeable lamp.

Opt for a cheaper or economy rate with your energy supplier

If you can afford the upfront cost solar panels are a good investment. Better suited to those who are at home during the day they’ve saved me a fortune. I stagger the use of the dishwasher and the washing machine to maximise use of the free electricity. A couple of hours either side of midday are the optimal times to run all your appliances. If nothing else is running I have two oil filled radiators I can switch on and keep the house toasty on a chilly day.

If you are on a variable energy tariff, ring your supplier for a quote on a fixed rate tariff before the price rise takes effect.

Also check a comparison site for quotes. It's much simpler and easier to change suppliers these days.

"Who are the fuckmuppets running OFGEM? They don't have a fuckin' clue. "

Its not really the fault of OFGEM.

Wholesale gas prices are affected by the price of oil, which in turn is affected by world events, supply and demand.

Gas prices for business customers is a live market, so it fluctuates daily, depending on these factors.

Domestic gas takes a few months to be affected.

What we are now seeing in domestic prices is the result of the Iran war.

Here's an idea, we will reduce and finally stop taking oil and gas from the North Sea and around the UK coast in general, because it's nasty to the environment. We will then simply buy it from very politically stable countries in the Middle East and Russia! The upside being that we meet our own self set environmental standards. Win Win chicken dinner cheap oil and gas for all and we are leading the way for the environment. Home in time for medals and tea!!! Sorry did that sound a bit riduculous? FFS drill baby drill the stuff is on our doorstep, f*** buying it in.

Exactly this. Plus we are paying for some residents in establishments formally known as hotels. The scummy government aren't paying for it, we are. All the pink and fluffy cunty liberals should house and pay for 5 Illegal immigrants

39% is very high

I'm with Octopus energy, one of the cheapest. Their fixed rate was only £2 more per month, which works out cheaper than what the forthcoming increase would bring.

I think many people are so used to being warm all the time, I grew up in the sixties and if we were cold we put another jumper on , sleep socks etc and with single glazing there was ice on the inside of the windows, get a hot water bottle etc

I'm on domestic oil for water and heating. It's nearly doubled in price. Today I had to pay a small amount to the oil supplier because the account from which the funds are taken showed it would be overdrawn when they attempted to take it. It's not a problem, it's sorted, but I've never had to do it before, always been well in credit in that account. When they take the money I'll have £4 in the account

How can we have “ market forces” when you have a national quango setting the tariff. What was the point of privatising the energy suppliers?

You have just described Americas policy… Have you seen what’s happening to petrol prices in America, they are heading north… it’s Ok extracting oil but when it’s a traded commodity h the market dictates the price. If you think the U.K. has access to enough oil to manipulate the market you are living in a dream land. Like it or not the Middle East dictates oil prices - it’s why the OPEC cartel have been so powerful/influential.
