I’ve been booked in for a colonoscopy next week

Can I have your views on how best to survive this procedure?

Nothing to worry about. They clear you out with a strong laxative day before any you will be sedated with midazolam so it takes the edge off.

It's an intimate procedure but nothing to worry about. You are sedated or semi-sedated and it is painless

. I've had a couple. I wasn't sedated as I didn't want that. You take religiously to instructions the salty mix the day before, and you will certainly have a virtually complete elimination of waste.

On the day, you lie on your left side with knees bent. I was given entonox to inhale. I asked if I can watch it on screen as it makes it fairly comfortable. Tube in, breathe deeply and relax. Only slight discomfort for a second as tube goes road the corner. Lightly a windy cramp on belly. All done in about ten minutes. No embarrassment either. So. Nothing to worry about. The operator is happy to answer questions during procedure.

I don't and hate being fucked. But this procedure is nothing like it so if your a bottom, even better.

Had quite a few , as I live alone I can’t have sedation etc . Worse part is the bowel prep before and the discomfort after until you have expelled the gas ….Its quite interesting to watch , not often you can see up yer own arse.

It's nothing to worry about. I choose not to be sedated but I had the option to have gas and air. In the end I had nothing.

There was no pain it just felt a bit weird. I did feel a bit queasy. I could see what they were doing on the monitor screen. And the gastroenterologist talked me through what he was doing.

In hindsight I should of not looked at the monitor or had the running commentary.

If these things don't bother you, you'll be fine. If you have someone to go with you, you can choose to be sedated.

The drink that you are given to cleanse your system is certainly memorable.

If you have seen that David Attenborough film where he goes into a south American cave at dusk, then 2 million bats suddenly fly out in a shocking surge, wave after wave of them blasting out, well past when you think they have finished.... Well, something very similar is going to happen with the shit in your arsehole!

Just had it done few weeks ago. The drinks are fekin awful. My experience was different from the ones I'm reading on here. My experience was fukin brutal. I got diazepam from doctors n then used gas and air. Diazepam helped calm me down. Gas n air just made me dizzy. Got a few polyps removed. Got results yesterday. And all benign. Wot a relief

I had one a couple of years ago.

As others have commented the process of clearing out your colon starting two days before the procedure is a little unpleasant, but bearable.

The procedure itself is light relief after the 2 day clearout.

Bear in mind that if you opt for sedation you won't be able to drive back from the procedure, and you might need someone to accompany you.

I had gas and air so I could remain conscious.

Overall it's not too bad, and far more thorough than the one you might have through the screening program at age 55/60, which only examines the final third of the colon.

Pretty much as said here. Medicine to create lava the day before. Trousers and pants off. Lie on your side. Canula in the back of the had to lightly sedate you. I had a screen in front of me. Watched the beginning in glorious Technicolor and promptly fell asleep !

Woke up after it was all over. Lol

Do yourself a favour and add some squash to the drink to clear you out and touched just before you go. It is uncountable and also which end of the bowel they want to look at, they will go in quite quickly and look as they pull out. Good luck with the results.

One little tip.

When I had to keep drinking. I pinched my nose while drinking in each mouthful and you'll not notice the salty taste so much. Keep two glasses together. One for the solution. Drink the required amount, and still while pinching the nose, swill out with plain water from other glass

I've had three. Two as generally described on here, uncomfortable bloating, but its just trapped gas that you soon fart out. The horrible drink / flush is far more unpleasant.

Third time was extremely painful. I'd had gas and air the first two times though not really needed it for the most part, could have done it with out. I was there a very long time and they pumped a lot of gas into me. Was surprised how painful it was and the gas and air didn't seem to make much difference.

The worst part is the laxative, lol. Nothing awful just you wait and when you finally believe nothing is going to happen, well! At least that was my experience. As for the insertion, they got me settled and prepared. Offered my the gas and while I was sorting that out they pushed it in and I didn't need the gas after all. Really nothing to worry about and an important procedure if they have some concerns. Hope it goes well and you have not issues.

It’s nothing to worry about

Drink the la stove they send you the day before It completely clears you out

. On the day when I had mine I felt a bit of cold round my ring , possibly lube , then the consultant said I will feel a puff of air as the camera is inserted

When it’s in you don’t feel a thing

I've not long been through it, worst part was drinking the laxatives, they now have flavoured sachets but it's still rank but when you take them my advice is don't venture to far away from the toilet.

As for the procedure I got the pain relief injection and barely felt anything just a little discomfort when he got to the end of the Colon then it was done, think I was in and out within 10 minutes.

I’ve had a few colonoscopy without being put under, didn’t even use the gas & air. Knees tucked upto your stomach also they ask you to lay on your back. The bowel perp is what it it’s, make the solution up put it in the fridge to make it cold as it lessons the taste and drink it throw a straw as it misses the taste buds on you tongue. Mine resulted in stage 3 cancer, did chemo, radiotherapy & bowel resection. Now have an ileostomy, hopefully reversible but most importantly on the right side of recovery. Happy to chat with anyone who is about this. Don’t be shy check your poo.

Forgot to add, line your pants with toilet roll or wear some tenaman pants as you will pass wind and all the lube will come out an hour or so later. Wishing you all the-best for your procedure and hope nothing is found.

I also had a colonoscopy a couple of weeks ago and I definitely have advice.

The worst thing for me without a shadow of doubt was passing all the bile after the second dose.

To make the prep as easy as possible cool two pints of water in the fridge overnight before. Then when you mix it up use a straw to drink it. That makes it less obnoxious.

Pay attention to the recommendations in the documents they send you to spread sudocreme or vaseline around your anus. Also, when you start expelling everything, don't wipe and try to dab it off and have more cream. This is particularly important on the second round where almost all you expel is bile and it attacks the soft skin. I failed to understand that and I was raw and bleeding by the end. It was like passing liquid acid fire. At that stage I couldn't clean up without great pain.

The actual procedure was no problem at all. I had air and gas but didn't need it. I was able to watch them removing polyps that were later shown to be benign. It gave me added confidence that there was nothing REALLY horrible there.

Overall I was there for about 3 hours. I spent a fair bit of time wondering whether they found it easier than some others because of the big old dildos that have been there from time to time.

Like quite a few guys I opted for no sedation or gas & air, I relaxed after the initial insertion. As it went up it just felt as if I was being ticked inside, not unpleasant at all.

But use the prep procedure properly, I was last in the afternoon and the chap said I had the prize for the cleanest bowel !

Also watched on the monitor, like something from Dr Who !

I’m due to have colonoscopy number 11 next month. Unfortunately I have some extremely large but thankfully benign Polylps on my colon. I agree that the pre operation preparation is the worst part of the process. After one particularly long and arduous procedure I was allowed home after a few hours as normal but that evening had to be rushed back into hospital as I was bleeding from

my anus , my colon had been sliced. That necessitated 2 weeks in hospital, not a great experience.

Hi Gents.

Had my first one a few weeks ago (called in after a poo sample) and was absolutely dreading it. Nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. The prep is fairly grim, although I'd been s***ting through a needle the week before (bad reaction to some new coffee) which was a dress rehearsal. The actual procedure didn't hurt after the initial insertion. All the staff were amazing and kept chatting to me. Treated with the utmost respect and care. Was in very safe hands. Didn't have gas and air although it was on offer just in case. Felt fine and went home after a cup of tea and biscuits.

Bad news is, have now got a circumcision planned in for a few weeks time. Been having probs retracting for a couple of years (diabetes related). Hoping this goes as well!

As pretty much everyone has said, it's not something to be anxious over. Your bowel will be completely empty, you lie on your side so it's not at all undignified, and they take it very slowly, constantly chatting to you and ensuring you're ok.

It's pretty incredible how much they wind about inside you - with me they stopped at 90cm - that's half an inch shy of three feet. I think they should give out certificates!

You'll be fine but, nonetheless, all the best with it.

Had a flexible colonoscopy last week. Minimal prep - just an enema two hours before was no trouble. No discomfort with procedure and no sedation at all required. All very professional even if a little undignified. I could see the screen, biopsies done and everything was explained as it went along. Coffee and biscuits afterwards.

Unfortunately not good news, and a CT scan and MRI required to follow up.

IF a biopsy is taken it may cause minor rectal bleed for a day or two.

Other side effects are bloating, flatulence, gas, abdominal discomfort etc.

But nothing to worry about. You may be given a sedation or "laughing gas" to calm you and relax your muscles for tge procedure. A day before you have to clear your bowel by taking laxative.

Best wishes. Take care. Don't worry.

I have to have one of these yearly and as others have said, the prep is the worst part of it… Take the drink and tablets and prepare to leave your dignity at the bathroom door. I now book a hotel next to the hospital the day before the procedure to do the prep in, no need for the family to hear any of that happening. Make sure you have a good probiotic for afterwards because nothing is going to survive that flush through. Take the sedative when offered and you are unlikely to remember any of it.

Nothing to worry about, a simple procedure, after an enema, I just laid on a table with a young nurse stroking my arm, the doctor pushed the pipe up slowly and I just laid there watching the monitor from the camera, when the doctor took a sample, I saw a grab appear and take a small piece of my stomach lining.

Eventually he could push it up no further as it got stuck behind my ribs but I could only feel it knocking from inside. The amazing bit was when he was pulling the pipe out, there was yards of it and the doctor looked like he was pulling a boat in.

Then it was into the recovery room and let all the air out as they pump you up to allow the pipe to pass through.

Advice is to relax and enjoy the screen show. I have been told off for laughing too much. Hard not to laugh at the ridiculous situation of things being poked up your arse while a pretty student nurse watches!
