"What is it, I've never heard of it ?"

Latest C4 serial by Russell T. Davies. Set in Manchester's Gay Village. Ageing gay bar owner and his somewhat homophobic neighbour. Not sure what to make of it. None of the characters very likeable. Doesn't show the 'scene' in a good light. Perhaps it will improve.

Bispham, Blackpool.

I've just watched the first episode and loving it, great writing with humour combined with more serious undertones.

The opening scene followed by the events from 10 days earlier leading upto it immediately gets you hooked to find out how that developed.

Great it's filmed in Manchester's gay village which will be recognisable to a lot of people.

Electrician neighbour is, ironically, the most sexy guy although he looks like he's weird and 'gets off' on violence. Also looks like both his sons could be gay.

Actually, your angry and inarticulate response - after a whole 2 minutes of viewing (see the attention span) - goes some way to capturing the toxicity and intolerance pervading everyday life right now, that RTD is focused on. Congratulations - maybe you should become a screenwriter yourself, or at least a drama critic. On second thoughts...

I agree. It's a bit disturbing. Also, all those characters surely wouldn't put up with Clive's arrogance??

I wouldn't go near him

It's a bit heavy.

The flippancy of his son isn't ringing true. The chap he lied about to his father could easily dobb him in

And how did the younger son know the alarm code??

Assume the father told him about having a spare key and therefore the code as well, just in case.

Younger son probably overheard his dad talking about the code. Same code for keybox and alarm.

Clive's attitude is fairly typical of a lot of tradesmen although perhaps more rural areas than big cities. I know a few who would never go near a gay bar however desperate they were for work.

Speaking of attitude the behavior of that awful Melba and the brewery guy made me cringe.

I watched the first episode last night. I thought it was well acted, good humoured script and quite sarcastic in places especially when describing ‘they’ ’him’ ’her’ etc pronouns. But despite the humour of some of the scenes you know there’s a dark undertone that’s about to come out. Good job, I enjoyed it

Wouldn't go that far. Obviously talented actors. Not sure about the storyline though. Think RTD peaked with Queer As Folk and his gay offerings have gradually gone downhill since.

It definitely does mate 👍

Brilliantly written despite how hard hitting it may be at times it depicts how hard it can be for a young lad to be gay especially with such a controlling father who obviously has a hatred towards gay men

Mind i think there might be more to come out about the father maybe he himself had a tough upbringing or maybe something happened to him that he hasn’t really overcome

We wait and see what happens tonight

The most dysfunctional character in the drama is Clive, played darkly and baggage laden by David Morrissey.

Like all dramas or films its very much over the top and like most dramas, the end becomes farcical.

I wouldn't say the character played by Melba was dysfunctional but he certainly harbours neurotic traits and is a bit of a wet blanket written badly into the drama and it probably exposes the physche of RTD.

Certainly I would agree with Leo's mindset that if anyone , gay or straight is beyond the parameters of what is a so called normal society, then he or she is liable to , unless brought into inclusiveness, then they can come to an unfortunate premature demise

RTD has a way of writing that feels like a knife in the gut be it cucumber with the attack, it’s a sin i cried so much watching it as it was harrowing. and tip toe shines a light on this growing wave of tommy Robinson andrew tate angry men who are setting their crosshairs on anyone who does not look or act like them.

i wish he added to clive’s sentence at the end about his life sentence

I finished watching it last night.

I’ve enjoyed RTD dramas in the past because they have reflected well on those situations but I was so disappointed with Tip Toe.

RTD made this drama too political and tried to make out unless you support the trans movement, you are a danger to society- quite silly and not a true reflection at all.

Making political comments in this series rather ruined it. Think RTD assumes that if you are gay you've got to be left-wing and a big supporter of trans.

If I remember correctly Section 28 was in force for about 15 years, and then only loosely, and has been repealed for something like 25 years. Plus did it affect many of us? It didn't make gay sex illegal or close gay bars and venues. There were far worse anti gay measures still in force right up until the turn of the century. Being gay in the armed forces was an instant dismissible or even imprisonable offence for instance. Times really have changed although there are still homophobes out there.

I may be accused of being a bit of a dinosaur for saying this apropos last night's episode. But I would take a slightly dim view of a school teacher moonlighting a drag queen cabaret artist in a gay bar. Obviously I would not condone violence in any shape or form.

I would take a slightly dim view of a school teacher 'moonlighting' doing anything! The character was especially 'dim,' carrying on with his activities when he'd already done a runner after noticing boys from his class frequenting the area/bar. Of course, being dim didn't warrant the violent attack!

The series features (not finished watching yet) exaggerated, unedifying and reckless/stupid behaviour from most of the main characters, which doesn't feel reflective of reality, for me

Of course we remember Section 28 but honestly how did it affect you? I believe it came into force in around 1986. I would have been 30 at the time and you would have been in your early 20s. Not a schoolboy being deprived of 'gay sexual knowledge'. Unless you were perhaps a young school teacher and forbidden to mention gay sex to your pupils and any book mentioning it pulled from the school library and thrown on a bonfire! Basically Section 28 did not affect adults. I left school in 1975, a 6th former and a few months short of my 19th birthday. Gay sex was only mentioned once during my school days as part of an unofficial sex education lesson by a bumbling and very prejudiced elderly science teacher.

Powerful but surreal. Not saying it couldn't or wouldn't happen but I found it all a bit over-the-top. The worse scenario imaginable. Cannot believe all those lads would have just stood there and let it happen with Saul being the only one trying to stop it. Leo was a bloody fool anyway going into a house full of high spirited lads fuelled up on booze.

Just finished it. Excellent conception, writing and performances that fully deserve the pretty universal plaudits.

Misinformation and a rising tide of anger, hate and violence are RTD's inspiration and in some ways it's a shame that the LGBT community were his focus, simply because there will be swathes of people insufficiently motivated to watch for whom the powerful themes here are completely lost.

That said, some group and set of characters had to take centre stage and overwhelmingly I'm pleased the light shone so powerfully, eloquently, and effectively upon the increased threat to LGBT people.

Oh and to those not convinced, well yes, it's a piece of fiction. It's not based on a true story so there's a great deal of artistic license. But 'over the top' or not reflective of how, in 2026, certain men (in particular) would behave in an agitated state and under the influence of alcohol? Really? Have you not seen the extents to which the current self-righteous, contemptuous, rent-a-mob crowd will go to?

A man hanging from a street light is intended to be powerful and provocative. He could have met his demise more quietly: it's called dramatic effect. But the means by which he got there are all too real not just for LGBT people but for anyone who doesn't conform to the noisy, great unwashed's vision of what's acceptable. Today the queers, the immigrants, the Jews, the Muslims, non-whites, the disabled, the unemployed, the elderly. Tomorrow the redheads. There's really no limits to the crass stupidity that informs their bigotry and hate.

Finished watching it last night. I actually missed the first minute or two of the first programme, which I now know has the ending scene in it. The final episode was truly shocking, but the whole series had a theme of menace running through it. I thought it was very well written and acted. I've liked everything that Russell T Davies has done. Alan Cumming was superb.

I suppose many will call RTD a genius for his allegory on the perils and pitfalls of modern gay life.

Starting with Melba , a latter-day Cassandra with his prophecies of how the gay world is now in retro motion, although Leo doesn't really believe in what he says.

The arch-bigot , Clive ,who is laden with so much baggage that would fill a jumbo jet, a failure in so many aspects of his life, his marriage, his relationship with his sons, his failure to secure funds for support of his family , via being an unlikeable person with former work colleagues.

Ultimately he is the driving force behind the lynching of Leo.

The Tommy Robinson type of character, let's burn the migrant hotels with the migrants in them

An Ian Paisley , manipulator, using others to destroy the homes and life's of groups of people he is opposed to.

He would be a major figure in the KK clan.

Then we have the mockingbirds, the innocents, the harmless, like Leo and George, Who just want to lead their life's in their own peculiar way.

But like in 'To Kill a Mockingbird' the bigots are there with their lynch mob ready to destroy the lifes of the vulnerable and blameless.

Here, RTD chooses a bunch of d*unken football fans as his lynch mob driven on by their leader , the arch-bigot and dysfunctional Clive.

What chance does a gay son with such a set of parents who cannot relate to his gayness, yes his path is predicted by Leo who justifies his employment of young gay men as a form of rehabilitation of their lifestyle giving them recognition so they won't fall into the trap of drugs and suicide in which so many aimless young people do.

Perhaps Saul is the most solid member of the Goss family, earning good money from his web-cam performances playing to both sexes who will subscribe. He shows compassion to his younger brother George and indeed he is restrained by members of the lynch mob, trying to stop the execution of Leo .

I would imagine RTD is portraying the rise of the Right in Europe and the USA where wrong is flipped as right, where religion is wrongly used against the gay population to justify the actions of right-wing dictators.

Where the Capitol Hill rioters and murderers are pardoned by a lunatic in the White House.

Perhaps its not just Melba who is Cassandra , the cursed soothsayer in whom no-one would listen to but RTD himself

George wasn't innocent and he certainly wasn't harmless, he became a right little rat in the final episode turning on Leo, the man who tried to help him and gleefully cheering on his lynching, only Saul was the decent person in that family and among the football fans.

I know it's fiction, but I was pleased at the end when it was told what happened to the main characters, that Saul was married, had children, his own business, and George's life was a mess

He was in the Gay Bar that Leo ran they both clocked each other when Leo walked Into the room

Thank you. I guessed that was the case."

No bother mate 👍

And was he not the lad who climbed up the pole to attach the coil that hung Leo?"

I’m not sure tbh it might well have been 🤔

It certainly was tragic and thought provoking. Asked more questions than gave answers.

"I suppose many will call RTD a genius for his allegory on the perils and pitfalls of modern gay life.

I know it's fiction, but I was pleased at the end when it was told what happened to the main characters, that Saul was married, had children, his own business, and George's life was a mess"

I thought George was looking out the window at the lynching but not gleefully cheering it on

Yeah I don't think it was gleeful. More inert. The post credits make it clear the moment basically destroyed his life moving forward.

He picked up a slice of pizza and sat down and started eating it, unconcerned after seeing it.

That is not the final scene of him. Watch the end of the last episode- he is crying in the room when they drag him out and then becomes completely emotionally dead. The last scene we see of him is George stumbling back from the window in complete shock, with the information that he basically ruins his life in response to what he saw.

I found the whole thing farcical- I wanted to like it - but too much agenda pushing from t-Davies

Banging on about brexit every other sentence- then that ridiculous ending & words across the screen as if it actually happened in real life

Boring

Wouldn't call it boring but found the mention of Brexit and other political jibes totally unnecessary. RTD obviously thinks that if you are gay you should be left-wing and anti-Brexit.

I think some of the addition of those bits was more a commentary on how divide we are in society. The Brexit bit was quite jarring though.

It was brutal at the end whether it was real or not and shows like I’ve mentioned before how hate can turn out to be a very dangerous thing

Powerful well written drama that showed how hard it can be for a young gay lad growing up in a house ruled by a over protective hard no nonsense homophobic father and only those who have lived in that environment can truly understand
