"Fields of gold by sting..its not a cover his is the original "

Quite correct .I suppose his skill is he made it sound like a much older song ( written 1993).

Only got to number 16 yet covered by many top singers..probably one of better versions by Eva Cassidy!..

Lovely song.

Otis Redding’s version of Satisfaction is brilliant. Keith Richards has said previously that Otis and his band achieved the sound that he wanted the Stones to achieve.

George Michael’s cover of I Can’t Make You Love Me takes a beautiful song to a whole new level, it’s hauntingly good.

Most covers are not as good as the original. Certainly when you factor in the original had the idea and (usually) wrote the song.

Watford & Worth Matravers

Just about anything by Scala & Kolocny. The way they can reimagine pop and metal tunes with classical piano and choir is beautiful. Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit and Radiohead's Creep are especially clever.

Work/Play in London, live in Kent

1. "No More 'I Love You's'" - Annie Lennox. Original: The Lover Speaks. Her biggest solo hit. She stripped out the synth-pop and made it torch-song dramatic. Hit #2 UK, won a Grammy. Most people think it’s her song now. I know I did and only recently found the original and asked who dares cover Annie?

2. "Hurt" - Johnny Cash. Original: Nine Inch Nails / Trent Reznor. Included on American IV: The Man Comes Around which is ridiculously good, and I could fill a list (video infra) Reznor said “that song isn’t mine anymore” after Cash’s version and who could blame him. The video is hurtingly good. This is a man nearing his death and he knows it.

3. “Hallelujah" - Jeff Buckley. Original: Leonard Cohen. One of the undisputed best. Buckley’s fragile take eclipsed 300+ other covers. The Live At Sin É album is precious to me as it speaks of potential. But this recording is fully realised. I thank Shrek for bringing it onto my life (and John Cale for crediting his performance of the song in the film to Buckley’s performance in the Sinead É session).

4. "Respect" - Aretha Franklin. Original: Otis Redding. Turned a love song into a feminist + civil rights anthem. Won 2 Grammys. Redding was a powerhouse and all kinds of everyone has had a try with this song but no one touches Franklin’s vocal. She started in church singing gospel and she is praying with every letter she sings!

5. "Nothing Compares 2 U" - Sinéad O’Connor. Original: Prince + The Family. Prince wrote it, but O’Connor made it heartbreaking and global. In his vault there are countless recordings and we may never know what gems there are. This emerged and apparently he did not like it hugely as he did not allow his favourite songs to be covered. O’Connor was strong and vulnerable at the same time. This is best demonstrated on this song, and she will be best remembered for it. I will always love her “Raglan Road” and her “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” but this is how she will be remembered.

6. "I Will Always Love You" - Whitney Houston. Original: Dolly Parton. Houston’s 1992 version of Parton’s resignation masterpiece written to say goodbye to Porter Wagoner became one of the best-selling singles ever. If ever there was a “I am moving on and leaving you behind because you are my past not my future but your were a good part of my past but you ain’t hold me back no more” valedictory ditty this is the one. If he is remembered for anything it is inspiring this song.

7. "Mad World" - Michael Andrews and Gary Jules. Original: Tears for Fears. The stripped back and slowed down version perfectly matched the vibe of the film using voice, piano and mellantron to sparingly and hauntingly bring us to Donnie Darko’s crumbling mind. Curt Smith even released a YouTube cover of the Andrew’s/Jules version with is daughter during the Covid pandemic. Some were upset it got Chrimbo No 1 over Himbo No1 Justin with “(Don’t let the) Bells End”; I wasn’t.

8. "Personal Jesus" - Johnny Cash. Original: Depeche Mode. Cash turned synth-pop into stark American gospel. Ok. I know I have already had the A-side. But the B-Side of the pressing was just as good. Not since “Brown Girl in the Ring” was discovered by DJs bored by “Rivers of Babylon” has the B-Side of a track quite so rivalled the A. Or are they both A’s. Who knows. Both are amazingly brilliant.

Cash’s take on Personal Jesus is the least gospel take on gospel in recording history, but one of the most affecting.

9. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" - Cyndi Lauper. Original: Robert Hazard 1979. He wrote a rock song about how great it was to be a bloke. She re-wrote the lyric to say girls wanted freedoms boys had taken for granted and added a guitar riff to hook the listener. Message and beat made a feminist anthem and the re-recording for her greatest hits made the 90’s version a smash all over again.

Honourable mention

I debated this one internally - mostly as I think in the ones above the covers are either commonly the go-to or rapidly becoming the go-to versions or are already mine. For this one the original and the cover are equal and I think will stay that way.

"The Day Before You Came" - Blancmange. Original: ABBA

First of all I discovered the song through Blancmange as I was of their age - I was a nipper but just too young for ABBA. My older brother was into Blancmange and had the tape. He thought the reference to Barbra Cartland was fantastic. I thought so too - not knowing who she was but I thought my 10 years older than I was brother was fantastic so it must be - not knowing then that a) it was different from an original I did not know of and b) he turned out to be a bit of a fuddyduddy.

The ABBA version I discovered years later at uni when they suddenly became cool again. I asked who was covering the Blancmange track and got that look. I feel for it immediately. I loved it ever since.

The lyric is dripping with emotion and whatever the opposite of nostalgia is - not just anticipation - if nostalgia is the pain of something missed this is the anthem of the pain of something not yet known.

Both versions have their place - and as I was typing this @WhiteSportsSocks adds to my Saturday Morning joy. The wonderful Tanita Tikaram has recorded a version. Guess what I’ll be listening to over my beans and scrambled on toasted granary with Yorkshire this morning!

"Probably a divisive choice but for me it works because it does something different with the song: All Saints' version of "Under The Bridge"."

Really pleased someone else thinks the same as I do, thought I was on my own about this…

Dave Edmunds, proving his expertise as a producer

'Baby I Love You'

- creating Spectors Wall Of Sound (1972?)

'Baby Let's Play House'

- a worthy recreation of the Sun Records/Sam Philips sound (1980)

'Let It Be Me'

- multitracking, to be like The Everly Brothers (1972?)

"Now this is a bit of a mix-up

Bruce Springsteen, covering his own song!

He gave it to, & asked, Dave Edmunds to sing it first

(Springsteen didn’t release it till about 16 years later, or more)

‘From Small Things Mama (Big Things One Day Come)’"

Dave Edmunds version is brilliant. I thought I was the only one who remembers it.
