I have never been to a gay bar, before today. I went for a quick drink in one in Birmingham today, I don't know what I was expecting at 4pm in the day, a few guys talking and a couple sitting alone, didn't speak to anyone better luck next time.

First time in a gay bar was in Glasgow last year, but it was on my last day there and was mostly killing time before having to get my train back to London. Shame as 2 guys started chatting me up but I had to leave 😞

I took my wife into one once we were meant to meet her cousins ( straight) for the karaoke i was wearing my leather bike jacket and was soon getting plenty of attention from 3 different guys which i was loving but it was too much for the wife to handle so after 1 drink she made us leave. Spoilsport lol.

Why would anyone expect a gay bar to be wildly different than a straight bar, and why are women obsessed with going ?

Wish there was a bar of any description that banned sport, television and kids

Can't say I've ever been to a gay bar as I wouldn't know where they are and I'm sure they won't have a sign saying gay bar so how do people know if its one and how do you find out where they are.

Would Google list them ?

I would love to go to one just to see if it's different to any other bar and see if anyone comes over to chat knowing I'm a stranger

I can't see what all the fuss is about. All because a bar is 'Gay' or 'Gay Friendly' doesn't mean it is a knocking shop. Gay men, like me, go to a non threatening bar to have a drink - it doesn't mean I'm there looking for an arse to pound. If it happens well, good but that is not the reason I go there

I used to go to gay bars in Birmingham a lot, 25 years ago. But hardly ever got chatted up. I had just arrived back in England and was in need of friendship. I still remember the profound loneliness. Gay society can be cliquey and frankly hostile.

Gay bars can be fun but still lot of faffing around before hookup happens. I do go to the bathroom early and almost always there's either people playing .... oral more so fun to watch lol

"Why would anyone expect a gay bar to be wildly different than a straight bar, and why are women obsessed with going ?

It’s because they get hit on relentlessly in straight bars. Gay bars have their creeps as well, they just tend to have their attention elsewhere.

I enjoyed a lot of Londons gay scene, but your average local gay pub tends to be ‘what if pub, but worse beer and Madonna on a loop’ which, nah, you good.

Very well known gay pub in Leicester. Used to go quite often when in Leicester but not been in for a few years now. Was always a nice atmosphere and not always about hooking up. But occasionally did.

Up until a few years ago most towns had a gay bar or at least a gay friendly pub. Usually with gay owners. Don't seem to be many about anymore outside big cities. Also a lot seemed to be taken over by straight couples and gangs of girls [real girls that is] on a girly night out.

The lonesome stranger, sat in a bar with a big surprise in his pocket! There's a country & western song in their somewhere!

When I was young as part of my A levels a group us went to the theatre in London to see the play we were studying. As 18 year olds we went to the pub. What a place, everyone was so friendly, us lads were bought drinks and it was a lot of fun. We had to go, said our goodbyes. Once out we realised we had been in a gay pub, in our naivety we had no idea.

There’s a great gay bar in Newcastle I go to now and again called the Eagle, strictly men only, it’s so good to just hang out with other gay men. There’s an area downstairs for those that feel a bit more adventurous…

Well as I have got the courage up to go in I might as well go up to someone on their own and chat with them, as that is what I was after. It was just like a normal pub apart from the glitter gold stage and mirror ball.#watchouthurststreet

I remember when straight bars used to think they could have a "gay night" once a week when it was a slack night and charge what they could get away with for some dreary old drag queen

We stayed away in droves. Fuck that...

Going back 30+ years I used to take mini-breaks [long weekends] in cities or resorts that had notable gay scenes. Quite enjoyed going to gay bars and venues. Of course I had an ulterior motive and invariably took someone back to my hotel room or accompanied them to their home. Then it started getting confusing. Too many straight people. Got chatted up once by a couple of women who wouldn't believe I was gay. On another occasion got talking to this really hot guy. Thought I was in there until his wife turned up!

A few years ago, when I was merely 'curious' rather than active i was propositioned by a guy having a smoke outside gay bar/pub in Leeds. I was too shy & nervous to stay and chat and politely declined. I regretted it almost instantly and a few minutes later went into the bar to look for him. Sadly he'd disappeared and i'd missed an opportunity for my first gay sexual encounter. His offer still gets me hard even now.
