It's funny how often the same pattern seems to appear.

The moment people start paying attention to you, liking what you say, or showing interest in what you're doing, there always seems to be that one person—or sometimes a small group—who suddenly appears with criticism, negativity, or attempts to knock you down a peg or two.

Most people are genuinely supportive, but there's often a minority who seem uncomfortable when someone else is getting positive attention. Whether it's jealousy, insecurity, competition, or something else entirely, their focus shifts from improving themselves to trying to diminish someone else's success.

I've learned that when this happens, it's usually less about the person being targeted and more about the person doing the targeting.

The best response isn't to argue or seek their approval. It's to keep doing what you're doing, appreciate the people who support you, and refuse to let someone else's negativity dictate your worth.

If people are trying to dim your light, it probably means it was shining brightly enough to be noticed in the first place.

You’ll never be criticised by people doing better than you.

Similarly

Never take criticism from someone whom you wouldn’t go to for advice.

👏 👏 👏

The old saying is true "your value does not decrease based on someone's inability to see your worth.

And, my favourite, "what other people think of you is none of your business".

i have an 'in law' that's always talking shite about other people, always bad mouthing and moaning about people, myself included and by quite some amount. The laughable part is that all the people he trys putting down are the ones that are getting ahead in life or just generally happy with what they have, where he cant hold a job down for more than a month and his own kids think he's a joke.

Ye Olde Bucket of Crabs - much if it is cultural by knocking down someone who is standing out too much through any kind of perceived success or improvement. Do your own thing, and feel free to celebrate your life. Let the naysayers stew in their bile.

Tall poppy syndrome. Absolutely rife, doubtless it'll always be with us.

"He/she is raised higher than me, that makes me feel the lesser, I will redress the balance, if only verbally".

Amusing though that such denigration only confirms the critic as indeed somehow lesser - who is heard to be in the grip of envy, insecurity and resentment, as noted above.

Standard practise of the failed. They can't reach your level so they have to pull you down to theirs.
