In a galaxy far far away

Has just been announced.

Is it a good thing or a bit extreme?

Hearing some of tbe things that go on at my nephews school I think it's a good think. 18 for many things in our society.

Mam and Dad can still help them if they've an entrepreneurial spirit and need SM for sales and networking.

As soon as something this powerful is banned it doesn't go away. It's pushed underground. And no control then.

In lots of ways I have sympathy for it. But it'll mean enforced age checks on all of us by the phone manufacturers. It will hand way too much data away on all of us. They want to ensure that every single image on phones are checked to be seen if they are explicit as well - which as a minimum will just lead to all phone batteries dying.

Should ban it for everyone. It hasn't improved society at all.

It’s unlikely to work as kids will find a way around it, just as they have in Australia who introduced the ban a while ago.

Too much of social media is poisonous; the Government needs to work with the likes of Meta to ensure that it is policed better. Deal with the root cause before it becomes an issue later down the line.

I heard the ban was also along the lines of showing the companies that they can be banned, to encourage them to sort themselves out, as they have done nothing so far.

I think all social media should be limited to people over 18. You hear more kids these days talking about having mental health issues then we ever did. I blame technology for this. It's funny how when we were younger and didn't have access to all this social media that there appeared to be less kids with mental health issues. The answer is get the kids off their phones and get them outdoors doing stuff that is good for them

I'd be ok with a total ban of social media, 99% of everything on it is a complete waste of time

Good thing. Kids are addicted to screens these days. Phone zombies.

May as well ban smartphones for under 16s, then. Dumbphones that they can call and text on should satisfy anxious parents.

Makes you wonder how many of us got by when we were kids, and had to find a payphone if we needed to call home etc 😂

It's a good call. It's about time we took steps to protect our children from harmful content. Our children have been stuck in this dystopian whirlpool since the onset of social media but no doubt the tech billionaire orlgarchs will rail agaist it because sadly in our society money is king. Social media is designed to be addictive so as adults it our responsibility to do as much as we can to protect our children from the negative aspects of it. Unfortunately the the governments plan doesn't include banning WhatsApp use for under 16s which it be honest is very short-sighted as many children suffer from being severely bullied via this platform. It will take time to change our culture for children so we've got to start somewhere

What a naive comment. Why do you think that the government needs to introduce such legislation?

There's been no control anyhow... Social media as it as formulated now is for adults with adult content. Would you allow or take a child into a high street sex shop? Of course not! So why allow them into the online equivalent? This is the classic case of the government being thirty years too late and missing at the wheel again. The tech companies don't give a damn... they are only interested in making money! Parent's should have the choice of buying mobile phones configured for children that are hard wired to prevent them from being used on adult sites or undesirable social media sites. If a childs phone can technically go on adult sites... you can bet they or their mates will figure out how to do it (VPN) That's why you need dedicated mob phones for children... not allow them access to adult phones! FFS, its not rocket science!

I think it's long overdue.

Social media gives a warped view of the world, and there are many adults that are gullible never mind kids.

Look at the rise of the flat earther anti vax types, and there's a website I could mention in which grown men are writing disclaimers because they believe a non existent tipodean higher educational facility is farming their pics!!

Youngsters are vulnerable to all this bs and the apparent lack of will of the websites to do anything about it has forced the govs hand.

Very difficult to enforce I would have thought. Not sure how I feel about it. I do think there should be a ban on mobile phones in schools as well as a good many workplaces as they are a distraction. But that is a different issue.
