It was funny watching tax dodger Tice trying to make light of his reform party losing by over 9,000 votes, no sign of Nigel?. Still counting the £5 million bung perhaps.

Im a makerfield resident, and Burnham was always going to win.

in the local elections many people voted Reform because of the shocking way labour have run Wigan council for years, wasting millions - but this area is a very strong labour area

have to say though, Burnham has flooded the area with his supporters and mail. we have had leaflets and posters posted every other day for weeks, prob 5 times more than any other party, and Labour are the only party that have knocked on our door - 4 times to be exact. last time was on Monday when a guy from Brighton was asking for our vote.

I think reform lost votes with the Question time programme, their guy seemed like a rabbit in the headlights, while Burnham is a seasoned politician and sailed through it

But as someone has said, people round here are sick of Starmer, its deff a vote to get a new PM

The whole by-election only happened for the simple reason to get Starmer out.

People thinking the result is nothing more than a confidence vote in Burnham as a local MP are deluded

Good result. Now we can sit back and watch the fun as the Labour Party starts to implode. Will Burnham oust Starmer? Will be interesting to see though perhaps not that good for the country. I'll enjoy it simply because of all the 'blood baying' Starmer did against Johnson, Truss and Sunak. A taster of his own medicine.

Not convinced 'all talk and no do' Farage and his gang of weirdoes, has-beens and no-hopers would be able to stop the boats short of deploying a very reluctant Royal Navy, creating a vigilante new coast guard and planting mines along the Kent coast. 'Stop the boats' seems to be their main platform. Look deeper into their 'policies' and a free NHS would be in danger as would workers right, pensioners right and a whole raft of other things we take for granted. Also their fiscal and economic plans are just plan fanciful.

Kenyon is a glorified yob. Certainly not MP material. A bit of a homophobe, misogynist and a racist. Very glad he lost. Also his defeat was a welcome kick in the teeth for the odious Farage.

Re. poofs, the word is like the N word. Or the Y word. If you are one, you can use it. If you're not, shock horror!

Kenyon was intended to get the "man of the people" vote, to counter Burnham's position as a professional politician. Failed because Burnham has been a very effective force in Manchester, and the people aren't stupid.

Looks likely that Reform is doing what all Farage's projects do - imploding.

Perhaps because its members wanted reforms, but not necessarily the same reforms.

Labour should call a general election

Same as Tory’s should of when their gobshites stepped down too

A large majority of voters vote for the sincerity of the person over the party !

The truthful fact is that labour only won the last election because the majority of voters were pissed off with the bs the Tory’s kept feed the British public!

The voting public should given the choice who they want to be prime minister not the scuabbling back bencher no marks who have been promised a free lunch voucher to back up their wanna be mate !

We are a parliamentary democracy not a prime ministerial one. We elect MPs and they in turn support one of their number to be PM. Incidentally neither Jim Callaghan in 1976 or Gordon Brown in 2007 called general elections for about 3 years when they took office.

He has more ministerial experience than Starmer had and for that matter Thatcher had. Burnham has always been a bit of a chameleon but probably this is his time.

If the country can avoid a lurch to the right and the nightmare of a Farage government.

I have a bad feeling about Andy Burnham. It just seems like he's in it for himself. He was an MP, then saw a shiny new job with more power so he jumped ship to become Mayor, dumping the people who voted for him. Now he's done exactly the same thing in the opposite direction.

I hope I'm wrong.

Lets see how he fairs should he try and introduce any welfare reform and finds his back benchers are more inclined to reject rather than risk uosetting their local voters to support him- whatever he does will require money so he either ups borrowing ,squeezes existing revenues or hikes taxes in some novel way ( as all current robbery ways seem to be exhausted!)

Good point. Remember when Blair jumped ship, leaving Brown to hold the sub-prime baby? Most resigning PMs stay on to the end of their term and don't force a by-election - not Blair. Sorry, Sedgefield peasants, must go and set up a lobbying company like that nice Bill Clinton.

Scepticism is definitely in order.
