There is a difference between choosing to miss education to go on holiday and it being too hot to learn effectively. As to refunds, education isn’t funded by direct payments but by general taxation so you wouldn’t get refunded directly anyway. It would be an extremely small fraction of a penny refund if it were to happen.

When it comes to heat stroke, you can't take chances. The majority of schools are not kitted out for hot weather. Until you've been in a classroom and been responsible for 30 odd kids you'd not understand.

Safety comes first! The general public would do well to remember how much of society depends on teachers. A teacher is relied upon for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, 9 months a year for 15 years of your life. No other part of society is so heavily relied up, so give us a break!

To be honest my daughter is a teacher in a 1970s built school. I am relieved she won’t have to work tomorrow or Thursday as this is quite exceptional and the rooms are not in anyway equipped for such heat

Yeah and as an adult her body is able to regulate temperature much more effectively than a child. Its dangerous. Today we had 3 faints, ice backs on wrists and having to be sent home. Its not something being done lightly

Rawcliffe Bridge.

My experience of school in the 1970s was the opposite, as during one winter, and I guess was a miners strike, and the heating was coal fired.

We had to sit in freeing cold classrooms with ice in the inside of the windows!

No being sent home back then!

But I guess we were a much hardier bunch of kids too!

That strikes as a wee bit unfair. Yes there are lazy teachers. And lazy doctors. And lazy factory workers. Lazy lorry drivers. The list goes on. But the majority of people in any career and genuine people trying their best.

I guess you coukd always retrain, get your teaching license and go show them how its done??

Who do you think makes the decision to close a school? It’s not teachers. If you feel so strongly about ‘over long’ holidays for teachers then you could be proactive and do something about it or…not.

We teachera don't get paid for our holidays. We are paid for 1,265 hours a year, with pro rota holidays.

The rest in unpaid leave. We just have our hours spread of 12 monthly payments. All overtime is unpaid. So no, we do not get paid for our summer holidays.

No one said teachers were hard done by, although ‘by a long chalk’ was unintentionally witty. It was about schools closing to protect children from the current heatwave. People’s careers and jobs and employment choices are just that, a choice. Some people choose to work 12 hour shifts, 5 days a week and others don’t. Children can’t regulate their temperature like adults can so are very vulnerable in the heat. Closing schools mitigates this risk.

Closing schools mitigates risk, it doesn’t remove it. Yes, some kids will go and play outdoors and some won’t. I don’t see what’s wrong with making the place safer for children. It’s a scientific fact that humans don’t operate at their best in higher temperatures and heat affects children more than it does adults.

Well then its the parents fault if anythimg happens and not the schools. That's a parental choice and won't end up with legal action against schools.

Don't want or need your sympathy. I did 8 years working in the UKs biggest chicken factory 5 days a week for 8 hours to ensure Tesco, Waitrose, Morrisons, Safeway, Co-Op supplied you all with chicken. So you don't really have a moral highground there either. But at least now we can see your sour grapes have nothing to do with the topic in question.

That has been put forward in all 4 areas of the UK and was shot down. Experts have told David Vameron way back in his time to start kitting infrastructure out for this. And like most political issues they wait til its broke

What a pathetic, namby-pamby world we’ve become. Snow? Schools shut!

Sun’s cracking the flags? Schools shut.!

What kind of example is that to set to children. The teachers of old had been through World Wars. You can bet your life they weren’t closing their schools because of a bit of weather. The idea wouldn’t have even crossed their minds. We just got on with it without a second thought!

That resilience built character. It taught us that life doesn’t stop for a thermometer. And guess what? — We’re still here to tell the tale!

Closing schools every time it’s a bit hot or cold isn’t protecting children. It’s teaching them to fold at the first sign of discomfort. Since when did “grit” become a dirty word?

Why are people so triggered by a school closing when the weather is extremely hot. Let’s have it right, it’s not just a bit hotter than normal, it’s 40 degrees!

On Facebook it’s the usual “protect are wimin and childrin” mob who couldn’t actually give a fuck about the health and wellbeing of children when it doesn’t fit their agenda.

Having your kids at home for a day or two won’t kill you.
