Doxycycline

I’ve been given Doxy as a prophylactic and am wondering how common this (prescribing) is and whether others feel conflicted about taking antibiotics, which should arguably be safeguarded for life and death interventions. I know Doxy isn’t one of the most valuable compounds but casual use of antibiotics is still a threat to all of us. Thought?

Doxycycline is a common antibiotic to prevent some sexually transmitted diseases because I have sex frequently with other guys. Cant resist kissing, licking, sucking, rimming, getting fucked - feeling too horny.

I don't have any side effects except very mild nausea.

I was advised not to expose my skin too much to the sun as it can increase skin's sensitivity causing sunburn.

Regukar blood test just to check liver and kidney functions

You make a decision. Do you want to protect yourself against chlamydia and syphilis or are you prepared to just go with the regular testing and treat it as it comes?

There is a small risk of resistance. But it would probably come from places where you can buy antibiotics over the counter without a consultation.

It’s been used as malaria prophylaxis for decades without resistance.

It’s up to you. Take them/ don’t take them.

I’ve been on DoxyPrep for over a year. It’s protected me with no ill effects, even with my dodgy digestive system. As a relentless, dyed-in-the-wool, condom-dodging t-girl barebacker, I wholeheartedly endorse DoxyPrep.

Can this be sorted just via a gum clinic or only via your gp?

Gum clinic and also online pharmacy. I doubt your gp would know what it is.

Mine didn’t know what prep was and it took a while to make he understand that it didn’t mean I was HIV positive.

The risk of mutations (including resistant strains) gets larger when the infection is most widespread. Dovxyprep reduces the prevalence of the infection in the population so by some measures it can also reduce that risk.

If you’re taking it as prevention while you don’t have an infection, there’s no risk of developing resistance.

Of course there are other considerations, for example you may have another infection in your body for which the doxyprep dosage is weak, then that risks developing resistance. But the panic against using antibiotics (in the U.K. particularly) is not entirely rational.

The gum clinic reasoned that a small amount of docy occasionally was preferable to a massive dose of antibiotics if you caught something. That made me think again about the issue.

There's already enough doxycycline resistance in the community I don't think it warrants worrying about taking it
