I'm thinking about getting a portable air con unit for the house and wondered if any of you have one to recommend.

Just be careful as some are just called air coolers. These are not air conditioners. Window kit required to seal from outside if you don't have 100mm dia hole to outside.

agreeing with sometimes_cd300 a mobile aircon unit needs a proper seal round the window (you can't just drop the exhaust pipe out of an otherwise open window, otherwise you'll be trying to cool the planet not just your room .) If you can do that then they do work, cost around £150+.

If you have an older property then a chimney is an option.

I know about the window seal and have the ability to do that properly.

It is a proper air son unit I want the info on and not an air cooler, (I have seen some that need ice blocks, not what I want).

I was hoping someone here has one and could let me know if it is viable.

My FB feed is pushing a l9cal company installing a proper split unit for £1499. Have to start squirreling some cash away.

Unit above my bed. Cooler unit on wall outside. 🧊 ❄️

I have a de longhi pinguino- it cost too much really but it does work, it is far from perfect efficient (burns electricity) and has a hose to pump the hot air out the window (the window sealing kit wa inadequate / so it just sits in window as closed as I can get it (curtains help). It will keep a single room about 23 deg comfortably but has little to no effect if the door is open ! I should be fine with a decent fan and a way to hang freezer packs in front of it (we do take downstairs), but having relocated here from Asia where aircon is normal, it seemed a good idea. It also weighs a lot, I got it up the stairs but never intend to move it back down / it’s just too heavy! For

The bedroom it’s great, I have to admit, I use it and appreciate it enormously, but if I could have found a window fitted aircon available in this country I would have taken that. Browsing Amazon, I do note a lot more similar things on offer, evaporative coolers may work here (they rely on very low humidity to work), but it may be hit and miss, plus they’re wet will likely mould over the cooler months ?? A decent fan is also not easy to find (think slow volume rather than fast small breeze) , but we I’m using one now in my living room, it’s kinda ok, but u can’t beat decent aircon. Sadly I haven’t seen decent domestic aircon in the uk to date, we are about 20+ yrs behind when it comes to cooling !

Thanks for the info guys.

I am aware that the window kits are not very good but I have the plan of making my own window seal with a large sheet of cardboard if I end up getting one.

Temp due to start dropping from tomorrow so I will see how it goes and do a bit more window shopping.

Got a portable one I bought a few years back - AEG one. About £500 on Ao.com right now

It’s a pipe out the window job but I highly recommend!! Had mine for about 5 years and it’s a lifesaver! My room is like a fridge. A bit noisy but it’s fantastic.
