Next week is the 110th anniversary of the battle of the soome.

On the 1st July 1916, 20,000 British and commonwealth troops were killed, 48,000 were wounded.

It seems madness now, but remember, times and attitudes were different then.

So my question is,do you think they were stupid, or brave souls that fought for King and Country and probably more likely for their comrades?

Would you have the guts to follow their brave example.

Duty was very important to that generation, probably something strange to the narcissistic me me me prevalence of today.

This honour and duty was probably used against them in my opinion, however the value of it shouldn't be denigrated

I've read a lot of accounts from soldiers who fought the 1st World War.

What struck me was accounts from British and German soldiers speak of the decency and respect with which prisoners of war were treated.

In answer to the question would I be able to stand up to and experience what those men went through, knowing me as I do, I'd say no.

Somewhere in time

Maybe I could have...Probably not.

But we have hindsight, did they really know what was ahead of them? And once there they had no choice.

Thank you to you all who faught for our freedom over the years.

Lions led by donkeys.

The battle of the Somme was the biggest and most wasteful use of human life that military conflict has ever seen, and that title takes some beating.

Would I have been able to stand up, be countered and go forth? If like to think so but luckily I'll never know.

The public was lied to, they invented the pals act(look it up) The enlisted men didnt have a clue what they were going to face. Accrington a small town in Lancashire was the first town to field a full battalion of men, they were butchered. There was barely a family didnt lose someone. One woman lost her Husband, two Sons and her Brother.

As an ex service man. I have always honoured those who have gone and paid a price,a lot the ultimate price. Those that served with me and after me still get my honour.

Since the end off WW11 there have been very few years in which British servicemen have not been killed in war or police action somewhere.

Those that pay the price of war do not look for plaudits just the recognition of their service

I think you are being disrespectful to those that gave their lives to save future generations, including yours.

But to what extent do people actually remember those who slaughtered?

I suspect very few actually make it beyond the virtue-signalling.

Don’t know wether you needed to know them but to remember their sacrifice keeps the memory of those fallen alive and respected

For some, surviving was a new hell. ‘Shell shock’ was so maligned. You see poor ordinary guys like you and me shaking with fear and nerves after withstanding months of shelling and truly atrocious conditions. What was asked of them was superhuman - I’d be terrified to go through what those poor people had to withstand - the first total

War, crushing bodies on an industrial scale.

Death in war is never glorious

The 'land fit for heroes' myth is thematically apt. Whitehall duping the brave men/masses.

They did not know what to expect. When you are young you are invincible in your own eyes. The true horror of war does not hit you until you are in the thick of it. I've been in the army but never been to war as such. Been part of peace keeping missions and seen things that I would rather not have seen.
