Risk from transmission is low with oral, but there are still some things you can do to help protect yourself. First is your own oral hygiene, make sure your mouth is in good health with no breaks in the skin inside your mouth, and no bleeding gums. Second is medication defence, PreP for HIV, although transmission risk with oral is very low, then there is DoxyPeP for the other STIs. Lastly, visual guide, look at the guys cock and genital area, any broken skin, sores, redness, rash, white pimples, or discharge other than precum give it a miss. Obviously a clean looking dick doesn't mean an STI free one, but those other things are an indicator that not all is well.
