Don't go down the route of cholesterol lowering spreads etc, just change your diet and include naturally low cholesterol ingredients. Google will provide lists of the things you should include regularly, but also a list of things you really should avoid at all costs.

I totally changed my diet and cut down loads of stuff etc went for another test and basically got same results back. I’m just on the edge of having statins and doc said it’s up to me if have them.

So many factors involved that we can’t alter and age being one of them.

Alcohol is bad for cholesterol.

I only eat chicken and pork. Lean meat only.

I only use olive oil for cooking. But make sure you use proper olive oil. Some supermarkets and big brand oil is not 100% olive oil. Aldi and Lidl came out best, when tested.

Eat more fibre.

You're doing the right thing by exercising more and changing your diet, but some people are just more prone to higher cholesterol levels. Do your research into best foods for lowering cholesterol and find things that you are happy eating, Google is your friend here. Keep up regular exercise, and don't kid yourself that going for a walk once or twice a week counts as regular exercise, needs to be daily and consistent. Quit smoking and cut down on drinking if you do.

But ultimately if you have to take statins then do, they aren't the evil medication the media have made them out to be. If the initial ones don't agree with you work with your doctor to find ones that do.

I have been on statins for nearly fifteen years now with zero ill effect, my cholesterol was never high but I'm diabetic and it's all about long term protection with me, I don't intend on getting heart disease.

Your best friend in all of this is to educate yourself and gain knowledge about cholesterol and how it affects your body in the long run, and what will happen if you don't address it.

I’ve been on statins for years with no side effects and about to start an extra tablet a day to lower it further. Diet has no effect for me. Whatever my GP recommends to keep me healthy I will take, drugs and vaccines.

I and my brother have lived for many years more than our parents managed which us evidence enough for me

Take statins to prevent heart attacks, strokes, paralysis etc Nobody wants to become a vegetable.

Because as we gets older, our body is slower in removing cholesterol regardless of dieting, healthy lifestyle etc.

It's a common misconception that cholesterol in food somehow gets into your bloodstream. It doesn't - your liver makes it from blood sugar.

How do check that you're cholesterol levels are dropping? I thought only a blood test could check that? I have been advised/prescribed statins... took them for a couple of months, but my doctors surgery can't advise me if my levels have dropped! I don't want to be popping pills if they are doing no good and possibly have bad side effects! Is there a way I can measure my own cholesterol level?

Indeed. The scientific consensus changed a few years ago but the wider medical community is still catching up.

It's also worth noting that statins don't reduce what's already clogging your arteries, it just reduces what's in the blood so slows/stops it getting worse. There's not currently anything that can reverse what's already there.

Exactly that, a follow up blood test, afterall, it was a blood test that discovered the problem.

The demonisation of cholesterol has stemmed from a huge amount of bad science over decades. It’s categorisation as a risk factor for various metabolic diseases isn’t linked to causal factors, just correlation. It’s akin to noticing that your street is full of fire engines and concluding that fire engines are the reason your house is burning down and therefore removing the fire engines will put the fire out. Your doctor has been incentivised by a local driving contractor to buy the services of their drivers to drive the engines away, whilst at the same time down the road, the local fire station is despatching yet more engines to your street because the fire alarms are still going off. You’re body is suffering from inflammation for a reason, and that reason isn’t cholesterol.

I have high cholesterol. The doc wanted to prescribe statins but i tried diet change first which worked. I cut out all sugar in drinks and watch what i eat in saturates every day. Also walk a lot. Doc says to carry in doing what I am doing.

Everybody is different but this seems to work for me.

High blood cholesterol isn't a cause of heart disease or arterial damage - it's the body's reaction to those conditions, a sure sign that's occurred.

The cholesterol is used to make outer cell membranes in new cells - part of the repair kit.

Statins are killers.

My Dr. has prescribed both statins, blood pressure tablets and Tadalafil for me - no problems. By the way a recent study published in The Lancet has shown that overweight men over 40 who take statins have the same low risk of heart disease of men hall their age.

The side effect of taking a statin is it lowers cholesterol.

If you have unwanted side effects there are a great many kinds of statin and there will most probably one to suit you.

If you cannot take them, fine, but don't be a dick and suggest they are bad for everyone.

"Any advice for lowering high cholesterol without taking statins. I exercise more & slowly changing my diet but it's still high."

What do you mean by high? Is this the opinion of a doctor? What is the number for high and low density? High cholesterol foods like eggs don't affect your levels. If you do gym and avoid high sugar and carbs you should win. The medical profession wants you to take statins even if you don't need them. They tried to make me take them when I was 75. My doctor in Poland told me I was fine, but the NHS bloke said I was at risk. I'm 91 now and never had any cardio probs. Good luck

I went for a well man check a while ago and I was told my cholesterol was high (4.8) it felt like the doctors rushed me into statins without discussing any lifestyle changes. I tried them for a month and found that I had trouble sleeping and had a complete loss of sex drive. After some research and talking to other people I stopped taking them and made a few changes to my lifestyle. I have heard that that big pharma give kick backs for prescribing statins ( from someone who works in a pharmacy) also it seems that the main body of research into cholesterol was carried out many years ago and that cholesterol may not be the demon we think it is.

I thought the upper limit was 5. I think I remember mine was just over 5 but that was because I had an excellent level of the good cholesterol.

It all depends on what is causing your high cholesterol. My high cholesterol is genetic no amount of dietary change will lower it so I take the statins and go on my merry way. If you can get the level down with diet then that’s great it’s just not an option for everyone.

Fat in food doesn't end up as blood cholesterol. Your liver makes it from blood sugar.

True, but having a diet with high saturated fat levels causes your LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff) to rise
