Bateaux Tapestry on show in the UK

North London (outer)

The Bateaux Tapestry is due to go on display at the British Museum in September, having been carefully transported from its home in Normandy.

Originally made in Britain, it's 700 metres long and nearly 1000 years old. Tickets go on sale today, does anyone have plans to visit?

I think I'll wait until I buy tickets, I just looked at the website and there were 74651 ahead of me in the queue.

Standard price is £33, less for concessions.

"Yes i will be going.

Created here in my home town of Leek. I saw it on display in the local library as a youngster.

I later worked at the factory that had dyed the thread used in it.

There's a Sainsbury's on that site now.

Victorian modesty means that some of the figures have underpants where they did not in the original. 🤣

Interesting to note that to view said tapestry in France only costs €12 (€7.50 concessions) and children under 10 free.

We musn't accuse the BM of exploitation must we children ?

Probably so expensive to cover the enormous costs of getting it here in one piece and the insurance premiums for it.

I do wonder how they will transport it

You can’t exactly roll it up like a carpet !

So we're going to be refusing to give it back, since it was made here, so it's ours, right? Like the Elgin Marbles...

Do we have to send it back. We could just keep it. The French wouldn't be happy but what are they going to do about it. Nowt from previous experiences.

Well of course there are Bateaux on the tapestry - the Normans were the original small-boat folk! Coming over here, thanking our kingdoms … next thing we won’t even be speaking late Anglo-Saxon.

You lot are only going to look at the penises!!

Oxford academic Prof George Garnett counted 93 penises in 2018 – with 88 belonging to horses and another five to men.

But Dr Christopher Monk said he had counted one more on another man.

I suppose I’d better go and check the number myself to be certain.

Seen it twice in Bayeux. Best presented historical display I've ever seen. Don't really know why they feel the need to build a new home for it. Apart from anything else, it's worth going to see it to find all the penises on it - there are five I think, if you don't count all the horses!
