Just had a chat with a guy on one of the other apps. We were getting along, seem to have everything in a row. Asked him if he's coming over, he then said he can't drive.

Now I know there are myriad reasons people may not drive, but something in my mind really takes me to some cardigan-wearing guy sat in a house full of his dead mothers clothes watching a old tube-style tv and it jist puts me off.

I didn’t learn until I was 50, I had been living in London for many years and you can survive pretty well without a car down there.

Not everyone can afford the cost of a car these days. However if the guy says he can travel I would assume he has access to one. Otherwise it should say in the profile that he travels by public transport

I'm 40 and never driven a car in my life.

With public transport and the metro here it's much cheaper than owning a car.

With do some of the drivers on the road these days I wish I didn’t need to drive a car, but if you live in a rural location either no public transport that’s not an option. Those who live in a city with good transport options and difficult parking are making a sensible choice to not drive, although it might limit your options for a middle of the night liaison.

I do get there are practical reasons, especially now in more environmentally aware times, but for a certain generation, getting the L-plates out at 17 was all most guys aimed for, that freedom. In fact i remember being laughed at by my mates at 19 since they were already on the road, but getting that licence was something everyone it seemed to aspire to, yet I find in my dealings on here and elsewhere, that it passed many by. If you can manage with public transport, thats fine, it's more about the freedom as a young lad passing people by, that's why I find the concept of guys 30+ not being upwardly mobile, it makes me think something has held them back, finances, overbearing parents, fear.

Never learned to drive. Don't feel the need really. Public transport is still a viable option in all but the most rural areas and a heck of a lot cheaper. I can get from where I am to the nearest big city and back for about 15 quid. For a car driver the same journey would cost more in petrol, maintenance, tax, mot, parking and insurance

Yes - for those of us living in or near a city with reasonable transport links, we can do most of our travel without a car. The fixed costs associated with owning a car are then out of all proportion to the slight increase in convenience that it provides.

I can drive and can host. I do wonder how much fun someone is having if they cannot do either.

Having driven for nearly 50 years in every sort of condition, all over the UK, I now find poor driving standards, disregard for the Highway Code, incidences of road rage, and heavier traffic volumes enough to keep me off the road.

Correct a lot of reasons why someone can't drive and none of the what's in your head, glad I'll never be talking to someone as judgemental as you!

I live out in the sticks, so if the guy can’t drive it’s a no-go. Always reluctant to drive to the other guy. I’m really fussy about things being clean n tidy, and a lot of guys don’t seem to be up to the mark

I'm also out in the sticks, we have no bus service here. When people have said, "I'll get public transport to you" the answer is "please don't even try". I'm 15 minutes from 3 small towns with buses but they only run one an hour and it's then getting from the town to me.....Oh, to live in West London again lol. Come the day when I can't drive....

But it isn't tongue and cheek though is it, the fact that the guy was a non driver made you view him differently for whatever reason and put you off meeting him.

So what is it about someone who doesn't drive that puts you off them??

Suppose it largely depends where you live. In big cities driving can be a nightmare and slow. Plus public transport readily available. Here in the sticks I would be lost without a car especially now I find walking any distance difficult.

After working and living in London for years, I didn’t learn to drive until my 40s. Outside London, it was clear I was missing out on work opportunities so that speared me on to learn to drive and pass my test.

I'm reluctant to drive these days. I've had so many wind ups and time wasters that I'm reluctant to spend the time if I haven't developed a relationship with the guy.

It's a great shame, as some of the bust fucks I've had have been in other guys houses.

Good bus service and motorcycle. Never wanted a car, always seemed a bit arrogant/ needy to want a ton or more of metal simply to get to the shops. Perceived status or not.

Strange. Don't think it's arrogant or needy. Hardly any public transport around here. Used to ride a motorcycle but that had its limitations for shopping etc. I would use the motorbike for just going somewhere but the car has become more essential as I've got older. Incidentally passed motorbike test at 17, car at 20 and advanced driver at 25.

How bizarre — the OP posts a thread people respond in good faith, and then OP comes back with- "Oh dear. It was meant tongue-in-cheek. Never mind." So just what was the actual point of the thread then other than wasting other people's time and effort? 🤔

The part about being at home in a cardigan etc was the tongue in cheek bit. Obviously some stay home in a negligé looking at this. The point is, as I've said later in the post, other than finances and medical issues I don't recall seeing anyone who didn't aspire to get on the road (at my age of being able to). Stop getting your knickers in a twist. It was an ovservation from one point of view, it wasn't about you. This is why society is getting so intolerable. You have to please everyone

"The part about being at home in a cardigan etc was the tongue in cheek bit. "

So what do you have against cardigans? Why do you feel compelled to provoke sneers and sniggers over the clothing choices of others?

For quick short-term temperature regulation when indoors, they are an eminently practical garment.

Glad someone else is speaking up for those who can't drive due to conditions that arw unseen!

I used to have a condition where I have blank siezures called Petit Mal. Often mislooked as someone staring into space but actually losing consciousness whilst still being awake. (Scary stuff right!)

I still do to the day have snippets of that too

I can't drive at the moment owing to an eye infection and have had many wild goose chases like, getting sent to bogus addresses, no one in or a 40 mile round trip to be told 'no,I don't fancy you after all'. So for a first meet I definitely only accommodate.

Exactly how it happens! People used to think I was ignoring them and had to shout me to get me back into consciousness before talking to me again. Sometime it last about 10 minutes, others a minute or so. It's horrible to have as draining too as you never know when the next attack is!

Had one a few years back at work whilst on tills and had to explain that I had a siezure. Thankfully they understood.

I can’t accommodate usually, I’m grateful to those who can , think nothing of driving up to an hour, to have hot sex with a man , used to driving , yeah you can get stood up , a pain , I have had 2 meets where we didn’t click , but I make sure I get something out of the trip , so it’s not a wasted journey, funnily enough I can accommodate later in July people who were keen to meet now have gone quiet , others who say they can travel say it’s too far , I’ve only had to cancel one meet at short notice, otherwise I turn up on time , clean , with fresh breath and looking like my picture , otherwise why bother

as an ex truck driver and motorcyclist and car owner i find a lot of drivers think they are in a video game and if they crash they can press reset. i feel that modern drivers bully their way into traffic and i tend to walk to where i am going if i can and only use the car for further trips my car is old and heavy and would make a mess of a modern car but it doesnt stop them so i can understand some people not bothering

I've just never felt the desire to drive. I grew up in a city, spent the majority of my 20s in a city.

I live out in the sticks now and my day to day life was probably easier while my partner was alive who could drive. Still though, on my own, I don't really care that much. I have a train station in walking distance of my house, so I can get anywhere I need.

I did look at lessons but essentially they only occur during my peak hours of work - nothing at all after 5 or the weekend. So it'll just stay this way forever!
