An old school Conservative who spoke her mind and lived by her principles. Fiercely loyal, plain-spoken, and a kind lady underneath it all. The world is all the poorer with her passing.

'The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended.'

The “lady” had no respect for our community. She hadn’t a single shred of decency in her body. She will not be missed. As to the occasion I would suggest fiesta with a small but indulgent orgy to celebrate here shuffling off her mortal coil.

With due deference to the passing of another human, and while I’m sure her close family and friends will mourn her death to whom I naturally extend my condolences, I don’t think outside of those circles the world will be too sorry to see her gone.

An ex Tory, bigoted, so a natural progression into Reform where her homophobic views and general hatred could find a willing audience. Her views and politics will not be missed.

Didn't always agree with her but she was a character. An old school eccentric. Much needed in politics to counteract the dull grey men and women who all look and act like zombies. A bit surprised about her age though. Always imagined she was years older. Probably her demeanour and dress sense.

Sad to see so many negative and nasty comments. Fine she was bigoted and not everyone's cup of tea but I don't think she was a bad person.

Well said _ildwesthero! I'm sure that Widdie would be rather amused at some of the untoward remarks here, her morning cuppa in hand, peering over the Telegraph, eyebrow up, watching them stew in their own vitriolic gall and shaking her head in world-weary amusement, not caring a jot for the curdled wrath of the pink faction on the net as she prepares to be reunited with the great Iron Lady with much to catch-up on! 🇬🇧 😂

Only met her once sat next to her in first class on a train from London to Birmingham, she wore dark sunglasses and pretended to be asleep all the way, obviously she didn't want to sit with others and considered herself above everyone.

I also met Mo Mowlam on train from London to Rugby, she was the life and sole of the coach, I almost didn't get off at Rugby just for her company.

Sadly we get bigots in all walks of life but it does not make them bad unless they act on their bigotry in a violent or disgusting manner. I bet many of us know bigots yet even like them: parents, siblings, friends, work colleagues etc.

Widders may have been anti gay in principle [often wondered if she had gay tendencies herself] but she didn't actually harm gay people. Remember once her sitting on a chat show trying to reason with a gay man. Sadly he was the one who came over as the bigot because he got enraged rather than calmly state his case. She certainly did not demand his arrest or imprisonment, or beat him up with her handbag. She said she thought his sexual practices were wrong and that he should refrain. She also condemned cottaging/cruising. Her opinion but obviously not ours.

I met her when she was doing pantomime. She had a warm personality and was very friendly.

I didn't share her views on many issues, of course, but she was hard working and represented Maidstone for 23 years.

I think her move to the Brexit party and Reform was really a retirement hobby and, in some ways, may have tarnished her reputation.

And I have pointed out that she did not stop any pro-gay legislation being passed, Nor did she actually try to implement any anti-gay _aws. Fine she didn't approve of us. Sadly quite a few people even in these enlightened times don't. I may not have been a big supporter of hers. Often saw her as a total eccentric and a silly old fool. Still don't think it warrants all the vitriolic comment on here and other pro-gay internet platforms. Ironically some show extreme bigotry.

There’s an article on Pink News at the moment where they’ve checked and the opposed every single equality measure for LGBT people whilst in office. Things like section 28 did untold damage and affected a whole generation of LGBTQIA+ people.

I find it disturbing that as soon as someone dies, anyone who comments on any negative part of a person is jumped on as if they can only be remembered for any good they did, if indeed they did any. This thread has also highlight how much internalised homophobia people on here have.

Just as Wales has become an accepted unit of area I think Ms.W became (in a jokey way)an accepted unit of sexual unattractiveness. I remember repeating her name to try and lose an unwelcome tumesence.

A disrespectful note for someone just passed I know but she might have seen the funny side.

Would'nt have agreed with her on much But she would probably have been good to work with.

Vile women, arrogant mouthpiece for the Catholic Church, with her indoctrinated narrow minded, homophobia views, the best thing she ever did was trying to debate with Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry who absolutely floored her and an audience of self serving smug Christians. Good riddance and I’m sure that when it got down to the final few nano seconds of her life did she finally realised what a massive, world harming lie she had wasted her life on.

"Not all harm is physical. She harmed plenty of people with her actions.

Explain

The fact that she consistently voted against _aws to promote equality and human rights should be enough of an example.

But she didn't succeed in stopping any pro-gay legislation. Plus she never voted to have us illegalised, imprisoned or executed. Far bigger bigots on the far-left who have wished harm on others who they don't agree with.

“She didn’t want you dead, and there are worse people” is not the argument you think it is.

And your response says precisely nothing.

Sorry, did you need that in a bigger print??

Very funny. My point is you did not explain yourself and probably can't.

What exactly would you like me to explain? You already wanted me to explain how she harmed people, and when I did just that your response essentially boiled down to “it could have been worse” …

I'm in total agreement. Criticise with reason, not with abuse and expletive language of the saloon bar!

This will likely be my last reply, I’m enjoying my day out at the sauna on the sundeck. But where exactly in this exchange are the expletives I used?

Despite not being a fan of her views, I’m also not a fan of murder, if that’s what it was. An unpleasant turn of events, but sadly many politicians across all divisions face risks in expressing their views. However horrible many of those views are (reform & restore in particular) savagely ending a life isn’t the solution.
