I used to live overseas and had such a gurlfriend. It was great we had lots chats about clothes, make-up etc and kept each other informed on places to go and buy when new stuff was in. We also dated guys and other tgirls together. Often we also found we had met with the same guys and it was great comparing "notes" when either of us was about to meet someone that was known.

We are know in different places but still chat.
