Your best mainstream gay films.

For me Bent and Kiss of the spider woman also the recent Call me by your name was excellent. I realise fillms are subjective so what is at the top of your best list.

There’s a foreign film called Falling Skyscrapers (I think)

Horrible, HORRIBLE ending

Pity because there’s a HOT sex scene..

Also David’s Birthday

In the 80s, My Beautiful Launderette. I think it was groundbreaking for its time, not just for challenging homophobia and racism but also for the eroticism without any actual sex scenes

This. I watch it regularly (and the stage version with Suzanne Jones as Sandra).

A couple more favourites of mine would be Clapham Junction and All Of Us Strangers.

Oh, and a big nod to Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert too. All three leads are brilliant, but Terence Stamp in particular just kills it in his role.

📽 'Apartment Zero' has its moments

Many of Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's films are downright gay or with heavy gay/lesbian/trans undertones:

📽 'The law of desire'

📽 'Labyrinth of passion'

📽 'Matador'

📽 'Bad education'

📽 'Dark habits'

📽 'High heels'

📽 'What have I done to deserve this?'

Beautiful Thing

It’s gritty, funny and a romantic film

2 teen boys neighbours in a tower block 1 bullied by his classmates the other bullied by his brother & father

They fall for each other - it’s a beautiful thing

Well acted by Scott Neal & Glen Berry

With a good supporting cast Linda Henry, Tameka Empson & Ben Daniel’s

The closing scene is so heartwarming

It’s just a bloody good film

'The Naked Civil Servant', without doubt, though Brokeback was magnificent. I had the pleasure to go to a very well-attended talk by Quentin Crisp at university, and what an inspirational and brave guy he was - that was in the mid-70s when so much of what we now take for granted was not just frowned and spat upon, it was illegal. He was also VERY funny in a wonderfully dry way; John Hurt captured the essence of him quite perfectly.

There was also a film maybe from the late 80s /early 90s I think revolving around a garage and gay guys being murdered, I think a guy from soldier soldier was in it?

I liked it but I wish straight actors weren’t representing gay men yet again. There are actors who are gay. Fuck, there are stars who are gay! Plus, one of the co-stars is a super-yikes abuser, so not gonna rewatch it anytime soon.
