I've always felt safe around PDI but last night I was attacked close to the Tourist Information Centre. I wasn't cruising, I was walking home from Yumbo, in only dm's and jockstrap. 3 guys, I think they were shocked when I fought back. Downed 1 of them and the other 2 ran off. Cut above eye, sore wrist and a few bruises. Be careful out there, it was obvious I had no phone/money, presumably homophobic teens.

I don't condone you being attacked at all but I'm not sure that being out in public in a jock strap is a great idea anywhere.

Seems a strange thing to do.

I understand your view. But its not unusual to see guys dressed like this in that area

Its worrying to hear there's gay bashing in that area, you should report it to the police,

They are very supportive of yhe gay community around the Yumbo

My god, I am so so sorry to hear this I walked past there at 4am this morning, that is such a sobering thought I never thought I would hear of the day this would happen here. I hope you are recovering and aren’t too shaken

As someone who goes twice a year most years and mostly solo, I hate reading this. I hope you are ok. It’s always being a cruising area at that spot I believe so I hope they aren’t attacking people now. Glad you are ok and were able to fight back. Thanks for the info

I'm hoping it's a one off. I wasn't cruising there but have done many times in the past. Yes a bit sketchy but never felt unsafe and part of the thrill was seeing Police drive past on the main road.

I'm feeling much better now except for a very sore wrist but may venture out tonight

Tbh you were drawing attention to yourself, you shouldn't walk around like that. That is liable to happen virtually anywhere in the world tbh

To be clear I'm not saying you deserved it, but just making the point that anywhere in the world where you call that much attention to yourself you run the risk of being attacked.

I'm an out gay man into all sorts of kinks and zero shame about sex etc. Even I think it's inappropriate to walk around in a normal public place just in a jock. Loads of the bars have lockers...

I've been coming to PDI for 15 years and its common place. Each to their own, as people have said, it's almost unheard of here, it's considered a safe space. Oh well

I go to Maspalomas/ PDI twice a year at least every year. I don't agree, it's not common even walking around the Yumbo centre outside of bars, let alone walking around town. If you are alone and doing it you are effectively making yourself a target. This kind of stuff does make people more homophobic too.

I'm gay, out, not ashamed, wear fetish gear, go to cruise bars and cruising grounds etc. and even I consider that grossly inappropriate. Nobody deserves to be attacked but you run the risk anywhere if you are walking around a public non gay space, alone, in a jockstrap whether it be PDI, Berlin, Manchester, Sitges etc. PDI isn't only for gay men, unfortunately the local government is trying to pivot away from gay tourism too, and stuff like this (dunes clampdown, multiple statements about wanting it to be a family resort etc.). Stuff like this vindicates them in doing so.

Also there's a gang problem in PDI. It's known. I was chased by a group of young North African men in PDI walking home a while back because I got annoyed with their aggressive attempts to sell me drugs. Shouted at them to fuck off and they chased me whilst making a weird yelping noise to alert others.

Good thing I'm a fast runner. The place has an underbelly, it's a real town and people forget that. It isn't just a standard 'resort' consisting only of hotels. It's similar to Brighton in that way.

You're very opinionated, which of course you are entitled to be. I can't see many responsible families being around Yumbo at 3/4/5am

It didn't happen in the Yumbo according to the OP. The insult of 'opinionated' just means you don't agree, which is your right. It's also my right to express an opinion given this is a public discussion on a public forum.

For context it is the middle of Fetish pride here on the island …. The whole area around the yumbo is full of guys in fetish gear day and night.. walking around in very little .. it’s tolerated especially this week, in fact it’s encouraged…

Having said all that we need to have our wits about us and remain vigilant..

I wasn't aware, but still, come on, even in Berlin which makes PDI seem tame you would run the risk of drawing negative interactions to you if you walked around alone in just a jockstrap.

I don't think anyone deserves to be attacked or harassed, ever, but it's about being sensible in the time and place.

If I had to think of one thing that would highlight you as a flashing billboard target, it would probably be walking around in just a jockstrap. Whether that fact is upsetting or not doesn't really change the reality.

PDI isn't a utopia, I've experienced being harassed by aggressive drug dealers and being threatened and chased there. I've heard other stories of worse too. It's not a place where only gay men go either, it may feel that way but it isn't. It's also a place that people actually live in, whether formally or informally (shanty towns exist on the outskirts). Not all those people are going to be gay loving and fetish positive or ok with nudity, for various reasons and in fairness would probably just as likely attack (or worse!) a woman walking around alone in just a thong in the same way.

I suggest using lockers at the bars. Even just shorts and t shirt slipped on before you leave will draw far less attention and potential harassment or violence.

I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you and hope you are recovering and beginning to feel safe and secure. And I'm in PDI now and frequently see men and women walking around this area in speedos and skimpy swimwear---I see no difference so reject the self blaming narrative. x

I’ve heard stories and seen first hand of men being attacked at night around Yumbo Centre. It’s not a new problem and as _ernowcub states it doesn’t matter your age, soberness or what you’re wearing. If you’re alone and looking vulnerable you will be a potential target and that’s not just in PDI but anywhere.

Your behaviour is dangerous to all of us. By your disturbing dress you are inciting hatred against the community.

Please be more respectful in your public appearance?

Lots of people deserve it, actually. Not going into a long list here, but his attire was harassment to other people.

If we attend events, as gays or straights, a little common decency is called for.

Cover it up, on the way home.

I went out again, on my final night, after several nights staying in. Wore my chaps and harness, along with Jock and boots. Thankfully I had a great last night and no problems anywhere.

I will continue to dress, to express who I am, in PDI. It's a wonderful place. I would like to thank everyone for their comments, whether supportive, or not

Sorry OP. I have to disagree with you.

Firstly I have a home in PDI and live there for much of the year. I moved to PDI BECAUSE of the tolerance and freedom. It is a place where people of the same sex can hold hands without fear of reprisal.

However one always has to be respectful of the local population who are strict catholic and pushing their limits of tolerance just isn't wise.

PDI is probably one of the safest holiday destinations in the world with a huge police prescence.

Perhaps when we talk of tolerance we should look at ourselves. May a woman walk into Sparticus? Do you remember when water was thrown over Kelly of Karaoke Kellys because of her being a lesbian? When women showed their breasts at Studio69 the gay men complained. Is this not a double standard?
