Started with plastic cage then to metal. I would say a open metal cage that is not to small to start with. Some go to small straight away and it's to hard to adjust to.

Started with plastic too, but didn't really like em all that much. Changed to metal and got smaller as I went on. Now have a 1 inch cage... Love to try the flat ones tho.

I went straight to metal and got very lucky in picking perfect size, the ring i think is 50mm

I've got a metal one with a hinged ring, which makes it easier to get on, although it can occasionally nip. But a bit of lube on the hinge helps helps. As has been said, best not to get something too small at the start. I've now got a plastic nub cage which is find really comfortable. Pics available of both.
