The reason people warn of animals in transit is because they will likely be driving slower and braking gently over longer distances, leaving a bigger distance to the vehicle in front and not accelerating rapidly so as not to upset the animals onboard. People are prone to road rage in these situations if they don’t understand the reasons for it.

"I believe the sign originated after a tragic car crash, where the driver of a vehicle was rescued, but no one noticed the baby in the back. It serves as a notice that there may be a child in the vehicle. " Yes, originally as a sign for emergency services then like everything else, people have jumped on the band wagon.
