My 2p worth: use the selftimer on your camera/phone and stand back (or pose however you want). The simulacrum of a third person PoV beats out pics where you're obviously holding the phone.

And use natural daylight, get some highlight and shadow into them. Flash shots in dim artificial light always look a bit shit.
