Memories of your favourite gay venues in Dublin that no longer exist

Before the advent of apps there were a variety of venues that came (sic) and went.

There were clubs like Hooray Henrys, Shaft, RiRa and one in the Ormond Hotel the name of which escapes me.

There were 4 saunas..the Gym in the laneway beside the George that relocated to Crane Lane and rebranded as the Boilerhouse.. Incognito that was attached to a gay friendly guesthouse The Horse & Carriage on Aungier Street, the Dock attached to a gay friendly guesthouse on Ormond Quay and the Vortex across the road from where PantiBar is now..very close to Penny Lane pub.

It was a different era.. cruising was popular tho you were in as much fear of being chased by the Gardai as by gaybashers. Lots of guys got assaulted and told nobody.

yes, I remember most of those places, but for me The Dock was a place I loved dearly because real old pervy men used mostly go there...I used be able to park the car almost opposite the Dock and at the time I was probably one of the youngest to go there in the later hours at the weekend after 9.30pm. there was a fantastic dark room...I mean "pitch black" and the minute you go in you can't see a thing and next minute you are being fondled, sucked, fingered, by maybe a half dozen men. when you wanted to take a breather down the far end where there were couches and chairs, older men would start talking to you and before you knew it a couple of them would be over fondling and kissing ...it was by far my favourite place ever for pervy old men...loved it, so sorry it was sold off.

The Dock...was that what became Inn on the Liffey or have I just been calling it the wrong name, all these years? That was my favourite place as it was the best for young who liked older.

Palmerstown.ballyfermot ie city

Yeah fuck remember all them...and was in them all...the old gym beside the George was my first gay sauna,,some great times there I was 17 years old.but looked 20..when I got in fuck I was so lost but found my way quick spent all that day in there..met my first love in there. Then we drank in the old out on the Liffey now that was a pub great atmosphere oh and punch ups..but Jamed to the roof on a Saturday by nine.forget about it if u were drinking pints as by the time u got back to where u were it was either half over someone or fucked over you.the good old days not like now no atmosphere in the bars and the fucking drama these days fuck me.. unreal and it's guys my age and older..think the new queers on the block aren't as bad..they dress differently but hey that's there way..my day was bright shirt white jeans..still do the bright shirt and have a pair of white jeans just to big..but yeah them times were much better in the clubs we were all there for few drinks dance crack. We didn't try to hang each other or be drama queens if we need to say something we did,how times have changed and not for the better, but the gym sauna out in the Liffey..the pod fuck the weekend kicked off on a Thursday night right through till Sunday closing time..and was able to work get home at 4am an hour kip back on the kitchen floor at 6 still hv pissed..but fuck did I do it..good friends back then to and fucking cheeper..never got bad vibes of any straight guys after falling out of somewhere or been cot up a lane shifting someone, so I done well, was always ready to stand my ground but yeah there was alot of attacks on cable street bridge..you just had to be able to handle urself..now fuck U certainty do the gays are worse it's not what happens out of the bars clubs it's in them..like some people need to get over them selfs..be queen's all U want but most of us aren't into your shit.be men..

RiRa was a gay bar?? Myself and brother had pints in there a few times. Oh boy….

I was oblivious anyway. I was about 21, country bumpkin in fairness to me but he’d lived in Dublin centre about 10 years!

Does anyone remember a fetish club along the Docks in Dublin maybe once a month called The GAG or something like that? Catered for men & women, I was there once but memory is hazy.

Don't think it was a gay bar but had a gay club night once a week..think it was Monday or Tuesday

Yes, it had a great stream room and great open shower room across the way. There was a spiral staircase up to upper level which I often ran up whenever a really huge man that didn't understand consensual was on the prowl..as he couldn't fit up the narrow spiral staircase..lol

Ah Incognito. I remember the excitement as I headed there for the first time after reading about it in the Sunday World. It was mind-blowing, I used to go several times a month when I worked in the City. Then the Vortex opened, but I think it was too big and spread out. Didn’t last long.

I remember all the saunas and have had great fun in them all at various times ...

The dock was my favourite as it was the first one I visited and I was always very popular there as 19 year old
