Dustin would have been a better candidate than the ones in it. Shows how highly thought of the position is, that we only had three people interested in running. I know which one of the three names I'll be voting for, wouldn't be surprised if the only one not actually running win it

Sir, this is a sex site.....

I'm going with Catherine Connolly, outside of policies being favourable (but this is a presidential election so....), she portrays a more positive, active, compassionate, community-based representation of Ireland. Compared to Humphreys who backstabs whistleblowers and is fully in FGs pockets, Connolly feels like an obvious choice. The president is supposed to be the representation of the people of Ireland, which I see more of in Connolly that Humphreys.

Can’t wait to spoil… They spoiled it first with their whip.

Voted this morning.

Awful choice of candidates, but a spoiled vote is a waste of time and effort. A low turnout sends a stronger message, IMHO.

But in any event, it's the presidency, a constitutional role with no real executive powers. There's an oath sworn and either is capable, whatever you think of their politics or past.

The only vote that really makes a difference, if you were so inclined, is to vote for Jim Gavin as it would set the cat amongst the pigeons and make for an uncomfortable few weeks for the government. The flip side of that is FF would get their deposit back.

So you if don’t vote, it’s put down to a multiple of possible reasons.. if you spoil there’s

No confusion. It’s that simple. Anyone who believes abstaining is more powerful than spoiling isn’t thinking clearly.

Looks like it will be Connolly but I predict now that she will resign before her 7 years are up over some unknown row with the Government.

Not true. Spoiling is only ever recorded as spoiling. Never what was written or why it was spoiled. That could be because everyone filled it out wrong, as far as the record knows or cares to record

"Not true. Spoiling is only ever recorded as spoiling. Never what was written or why it was spoiled. That could be because everyone filled it out wrong, as far as the record knows or cares to record"

Say 100,000 spoil today. Are you gonna be the one trying to tell us they all filled it in wrong? In a two horse race lol

Can you equally say they were all spoiled for the same reason?

"Can you equally say they were all spoiled for the same reason?"

This is like playing chess with a pigeon. I’m off to spoil my vote, for the same reason everyone else will.

Thanks for the Appeal to Ridicule Fallacy.

Seriously though, even if you can argue with adequate proof/logic that most votes were spoiled due to protest (and that an adequate amount of spoiled votes even exists to take note of, which has never in the history of the country happened), what do you even pull from that? Are we to assume you are all Maria Steen or Conor McGregor voters? Michael Flatley voters? Brian Cowen and the Big Boys fans? Nothing gets recorded beyond spoilage. There is no clear point being made worth acting on.

This is even considering that the government would even act on this. If almost none of the active protests that happened in the last decade has changed policy, why would a bunch of spoiled votes change anything?

Nobody cares if there is a spoiled vote. It will not be seen as a protest. A waste of time if that's what you are going to do.

By spoiling or not voting then you are not using your voice but allowing others to speak for you.

You can't whinge about who gets elected if you choose to spoil or abstain.

Very disappointed in the result. Heather would have made a fantastic president.

My vote and my choice led me to choose to spoil my vote because my views on key issues are ignored or not represented by either candidate.

I'm not advocating return to an 'old-fashioned' Ireland... but I'm deeply concerned at the 'obsession' with accepting 'unlimited' immigration into a situation where the housing crisis, health crisis, etc make any additional burden on the exchequer (i.e. the taxpayer) unacceptable.

Thanks for trying to be reasonable but I fear you're wasting your breath. Connolly is a worthy winner and has integrity, courage and intellectual rigour.

Wonder how many people lost their homes to the banks she represented in courts? there's a lot of unanswered questions and she certainly does not represent my views, a cup of tea and few biscuits won't cut it with her idea of dealing with Trump, uk or eu and our safety.

Watched them all. She deflected constantly.

She is the President now. Good luck to her.

As a protest, if none of the candidates represent your views and so on. There are many reasons and our leaders need to analyse and understand why.

So in votes of no confidence in a TD, that TD’s party usually abstain from voting. Men & women died for that vote & elected officials don’t carry out their duties
