I see people talking about boilerhouse & sex shops/cinemas e.g. glamworld and I don't fully know what goes on there.
Would someone be able to give me a bit of guidance?

1) What's the etiquette?
2) What are the expectations?
3) Could someone go and show off without actually playing, as a first timer?

Everyone's expectations are different, but I've never felt undue pressure to participate in anything I wasn't comfortable with. I'm a bit of an exhibitionist slut though, so finding my discomfort level takes a bit of searching.
My advice is give it a try, Boilerhouse in Dublin is a great starting place, open all hours, reasonable price, friendly, clean, and as relaxed or intense as you want it to be. The rest is up to you.
