I simply wanted to shout out about the amazing services of Sexual Health London.

I test routinely 4 times a year through SHL.UK Brilliant Service.

You just anonymously collect the kit from one of up to 400 outlets around London and postal return the test & they email the results to you.

Simple and straightforward.

It’s particularly a perfect service for men that can’t give out any real details (ie you can use an alias name and address etc) message me if you want more details or help

I completed my quarterly test just now. Pick up kit from one of the outlets on

way home just did it look five mins max. Will post it back in the morning. COMPLETELY DISCREET.

Come on guys put YOUR sexual health to the top of YOUR agenda.

Lots have people have private messaged me asking for more info (please see below) happy to take any more questions if below doesn’t cover it)

1/. Set up an online account with SHL.UK (you can use an alias name and address just set up a discrete email

Address so they can email you the results)

2/. Complete a quarterly on line sexual health questionnaire honestly. It will assess you as needing one of 4 different type of kits (Kit A B C or D) most gay men get allocated kit D.

3/. Click on app that says collect kit in person. Hundreds of outlets across London. Go in ask for the smart kit you need (“hi could I collect smart kit D please?”) with zero questions asked they will give you a kit and ask you to add a code from the front of the small box to the app to link it to your email so they know where to email the results

4/ take the kit (in a very small cardboard box with free prepaid postage also) home with you and in the comfort of your home toilet do the tests there will be 4 to complete. Test 1/. Urine sample into a bottle provided. Test 2/. Blood test using g a finger prick that they provide collect the small about of blood from your finger. It’s simple. Test 3/. Oral swab (just like a Covid test swab) and Test 4/. Rectal swab to put just up your bum and twist a little to collect cells.

5/. Put contents all back in box provide and post off

6/. Wait a few days and the results are emailed to you. Very comprehensive testing covering all STIs and HIV

It’s an amazing discreet and anonymous service!!

I also use this service and agree with everything above. I test twice a year when I collect Prep from the clinic in Dean St, Soho, also using their postal service in-between.

If you don't want their messages coming through to your usual email address, set up a free one with Mail.com, or Proton.

Yes, I agree, but how do you manage to get enough blood out of your finger? Last time it took me so long to reach the magic line my blood had coagulated and couldn't be tested.

Make sure the finger is warm … a milking motion is a pretty good way to get the blood flowing.

I’ve never been able to get enough blood in the little bottle with a self-test kit either. To the point where I go into the Archway clinic every 3 months for them to extract it themselves & I collect my prep. That’s all done in 15 mins and always lovely staff

Can I offer some advice on that?

Firstly, fill a sink with water as hot as you can stand without scalding yourself. Submerge your left hand in is and grasp your fist hard and fast for about 30 seconds.

Take your hand out and use the three finger prick needles together very close together on your middle finger, and you’ll get a strong flow of blood.

A couple reasons.

One, your circulation will be increased by the heat of the water and the activity in your hand.

Secondly, the three pricks in your finger will all flow together in one bigger trickle of blood if they are close together. If you simply do one, in my experience you just don’t get enough blood.

My method, which works for me, is to drink a large glass of water a little while before, to help with hydration. Wave my arms around to get the blood pumping. Immerse hands in hot water (as previously mentioned). Do it standing up so gravity helps. Push the finger prick device in and jiggle it around in the finger a little to make the hole slightly bigger. Then massage the finger downwards while catching the drips in the little tube. I always manage to get the requisite amount of blood in about 20-30 seconds.

I live in London but when I fill in the questionnaire at the end it only allows postal service or if you are in the clinic it doesn't seem to show where you can choose to pick up the kit from, I'm probably being dumb but if you could advise I would be grateful.

If you live in London and don’t want it sent to your address, I’d go into 56 Dean Street clinic and they’ll give you one over the counter

Recently used Dean St Express and was very happy - I did post about it, a copy below.

"Visited Dean St Express yesterday for a check etc. This was my first time there and I was really impressed. All the staff I encountered from the moment I walked through the front door were welcoming, friendly and extremely helpful. With comfortable surroundings and excellent facilities I can highly recommend - many thanks for your help."

Always use this service and team with Dean Street for prep … discrete, professional and with timely reminders if you want them (I’m a scatterbrain sooo super helpful for me x)

Great advice on the finger prick … have had to use all three of the prick devices in last few tests as my blood has been coagulating before I could get the bottle filled … will try these methods and hopefully keep it drama free lol

Let’s all get tested …. Helps keep us all safe x

I used the SHL London service for the first time. It was super easy and gave me the result in 2 days after picking up the test kit in Dean street. When I went to Dean Street express with my negative results for Prep. And that was incredible. They tested me again ( they said their tests are even more better) and suggested also to vaccinate me for MPox and Hepatitis B. The nurse asked some questions and gave me advice about using the Prep. I have my second vaccination in short. It was perfect organised, helpful and friendly stuff, not overcrowded. In one word: it couldn’t have been better.

Just to add to this fantastic thread.

The service is amazing and you should avail of it. Not only to keep yourself protected but others too. Even just for peace of mind.

But, it isn't as good as actually visiting a clinic in person. You leave feeling protected and supported. You can speak to a doctor and get prep.

As a starting point to someone who may be considering visiting a clinic or may have to if they develop symptoms -

- you can call clinics and speak to a nurse about concerns or get educated on a few things (like vaccines, *free mental health counselling (in person or over phone)*, prep, sti's and misinformation).

My first visit to a clinic I booked it under a false name and information but when I got there I actually felt at ease and told the receptionist I had lied and changed the info.

They literally have never contacted me. They would via discreet text or email if I tested positive for something I assume. I remember being really afraid that someone would see me in the waiting room. The chances for that were really slim, I wore a face mask anyway and nobody even looked in my direction. There's a plethora of reasons to go there anyway, it's nobody else's business.

So, the reason I bring this up too is because of vaccines. You have to go to a clinic to get some of them. Your gp might do it but it will cost you money. I got a monkey pox vaccine a few months ago. It's two doses , I was in and out in literally 5 mins. It was a pop up vaccine drive- I walked in off the street when I saw the signs. No issues , no fuss and I don't worry about it anymore. .

So, protect yourselves guys and get seen to. The service in this thread is fantastic and if that's all you're comfortable with, that's great too. I'm always happy to give advise on things like this or point to useful resources if I don't feel qualified to discuss it. Pm me anytime.

London/abroad

My sample got lost in the post once. Not great as it’s got your name on it.

I no longer live in London but I stopped using the service after that. Maybe just bad luck but I went off the idea.

Where I live now (in France) it’s very easy to get medical tests done - in person - at medical test labs of which there are dozens in the city. STI testing can be done for free without appointment and without prescription. You also get your results on paper/email including kidney function if you’re on prep, whereas in london you have to rely on Dean St (SHL?) alerting you if you go below the level - so I was never sure when it was checked.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s very good to have services like SHL. But I find the system here more convenient.
