Eagle Bar has apparently started enforcing its Members only status, membership available on line.

My favourites:

Rem(brandt) - small and friendly pub, not especially cruisy, tends to attract a more "rugged" clientele (including me).

Eagle - cruisier and louder but lots of fun. As pointed out above you may need membership, which you can get on their website.

Via - Relaxed (but can get loud), lots of nooks and crannies to explore, good food and reasonably priced booze.

The Goose - I find it hit and miss but it's generally good for a laugh and the staff are nice.

Molly House - downstairs is more foody (which is really good) with a bar, another bar and lounge area upstairs which is nice and relaxed.

Plenty of others but they're the ones I always wind up in when I'm over there.

I'm sure you'll have a good time

Thanks guys

Membership pending for The Eagle

Are most of these bars open late?

Obviously will be after 10pm once City game finishes

And are any of them open and decent in the afternoon?

Not sure of opening times, probably 12-1ish aside from The Eagle which (I think) opens at 4 on weekdays. Everywhere will be pretty quiet on a Thursday afternoon.

Of an evening most will be open until about 2am, Eagle probably around 3

i went to uni in manchester back in the day and used to go down canal street with friends for a few drinks as it was always a non agro good night out. i was starting to explore my bi side then so used to hang back by myself in the union pub and remember being approached by a really handsome older guy once with piercing blue eyes - within a few sentances we were snogging eachother's faces off and he sucked my cock in the toilers before i caught up back with my mates. good times.

Ah Hero’s, nowhere near canal street but gay it was.

In Manchester Center with entrance just off Deansgate and I’d be there usually 7 nights a week after a certain chief constable met his tormentor, usually every day lol and gay bars were from then onwards allowed to be open every night.

I met some superstars of the time in there and more than usual would also be very successfully sorted out with others. That was back in the day when apps were not even thought about though. Happy days.

North Shropshire, West Mids

Was in whitworth locke bar on edge of canal street. Really chilled out and relaxing away from the hectic crowds of pride.

Although this is an old post, it’s exactly the query I have. I’m staying over in the city soon and want to visit some gay friendly bars but I’m not keen on the club type places on Canal St. What are the best places for a 60 year old?! Quieter, friendly and maybe a place to meet up.

To add, I’ve read the responses but wonder if they’re out of date?

Try REM Bar on Canal Street. Good vibe in there and lots of mature clientele.
