Can anyone tell me if I have to go to my GP for prep or is it attainable from say a sexual health clinic?

Make sure you go for the follow up tests in some rare cases it can cause kidney issues, it is incredibly unlikely but if you are the unfortunate sod that it affects you need to know. I was put on an antidepressant once that had a ridiculously low risk of liver damage, I had the routine blood test and 3 days later had a call from my GP telling me to immediately stop taking it no tapering off just stop immediately, the test result should have been less than 12 to be in normal range, my result came back at something like 999, it may have been higher but that’s the point the scale ended on that test. Apparently I am now used as a cautionary tale in local psychiatrist groups as why you should always follow up on routine blood tests.

The sexual health clinics are really good about these things, from my experience it is always judgement free they give you a full MOT and check you have had all the vaccinations they can offer you. You also don’t have to let your GP know, the records at the clinic are held separately from your main records.

If you are Liverpool then visit the Sexual Health Clinic. In Cheshire East, the Liverpool NHS Trust runs Axess and it is amazing.

Most clinics are weekdays. They have a window for appointments and a window for drop-ins. If you've not been on Prep before, then they will need to discuss it with you so I suggest you make an appointment and ask for a decent window (30 minutes). I got mine same day.

They will go through a sexual health questionnaire with you, take some bloods (for the kidney/liver function test and STI) and then give you PREP. I have an event-based prescription and got 90 tablets. So that's 22 visits or a three-month prescription.

Oh, and also get the mpox, hep and gonorrhoea jabs!
