Not metal detecting, but I do love a rummage for crystals, hunting for garnets up in Fife is murder on the back at times but can be fun. I'd love to give some of the old mining spoilheaps a go. I hear the lead hills ones sometimes yield some good stuff.

Well personally I like nice specimens of quartz or agates if I can find good ones. But leadhills in particular was mostly lead, they used to refine some silver out of it, and I think they had Caledonite too. Although the likelihood of there being any of that left is slim to none, just because of how visible it would be as opposed to silver/lead. On the subject of Silver I've always wanted to find the location of the old silver mine up the Bathgate hills where they sourced the metal for the Scottish crown jewels. But yeah it just kind of depends on the mine etc.

Baile an Or, near Helmsdale in Sunderland has free gold panning rights on a stretch of the burn. Aberfeldy Gold Panning center has paid 45 minutes session at a Red deer centre Safari park. There's a fair few search results pop up but you might want to look into the rights to some of the ones they mention just so you cover your ass.

I got my grandson a metal detector for Christmas one year. Also, these very strong magnets for "fishing". They seem to enjoy it. I go walking on sites of iron age forts so i should try it one day.

Garnets are gemstones, they come in a few different colours but the ones you can typically find up in Fife will be of the reddish hue. You can find them in Ruby bay. Or along the Elie to St Monans stretch if beach. Although most of them will be very small.
