Pipeworks Glasgow - NO BAGS policy

Jump to newest

By *ecksdoo OP   Man

Alloa

Just thought I’d make everyone aware that Pipeworks have amended their recent bag search policy to now being a NO BAGS ALLOWED policy! They must now be handed in at reception and are tagged and kept behind the bar. Bit inconvenient especially if, like me, you take in things like flip flops, your own clean towel for afterwards and toiletries. It doesn’t appear to be size-related either - it’s bags of ANY description, even plastic carrier bags.

Apparently they have discovered drug paraphernalia on the premises recently, hence the strict crackdown. Yet again, those abiding by the rules being affected by selfish idiots.

Yea, have to admit I was a bit shirty with the guy on reception on Wednesday when he told me as I had rucksack with me (nothing rude, just expressed my annoyance at the inconvenience and hopefully gets fed back to the management). Thing is, am I being stupid or would you not just hide drugs in your pockets or in your shoes/socks anyway if you really were determined to take them in? It’s not like they do body searches

It's actually a Gay/Bi Health & Leisure Club - which has sauna. steam room, etc..

You can wear as you wish, as advised by management frequently

Incidentally I also met the new staff member , yeah, he maybe doesn’t know what to do regards certain things , I got that from him too , but I found him friendly , approachable and genuine. Which was nice , for a change

I’ve just been to reception and there was zero tolerance for a bag or its content. When I said I’ll take a couple of things out of my bag and stick them in a pocket I was told “well that defeats the point of a no bag policy”. I bring a small moisturiser and deodorant for when I finish but was told that wouldn’t be allowed if they weren’t sealed. Same with a drink.

He made no effort to explain the reasoning or if there’s any security process to make sure your stuff is safe. Tagging it and putting it behind the desk means nothing. 20 years they’ve operated without this nonsense.

It’s so disappointing but it really put me off so I left without going in. Been going there for nearly 15 years. He couldn’t explain the point of the bag policy to me but apparently my moisturiser being taken from my bag into my pocket defeated the point of it. I’ve got absolutely zero problem with my bag being searched and they could inspect it all if they wanted, I’ve nothing to hide. But I want to know my stuff is secure while I’m in there.

I totally understand if they have had issues with drugs (as someone mentioned earlier) but if they wanted drugs in they don't need bag.....just fill pockets as no search being done. With regards your cream, you could have originally had it in your pockets and got in so not sure how you being honest and taking it out bag to go in pocket differs. Surely they need to have a think about a better policy is this doesn't seem fully thought through. For the record, I'm not against them searching me, just don't think current rule does anything to eradicate the potential issue.

I completely agree. I have no issue with security and am happy for them to search my bags and to be honest I’d let them search my pockets. This achieves f*** all. All they’re doing is turning away custom.

Oh wow I went on Wednesday and when he told me I needed to hand my bag in, I took stuff out of it to take in with me (towel & flip flops) and he didn’t stop me or say anything lol. If they’re going to be SO strict then yea I think I’ll be visiting much less - I could just about cope with not having a clean towel at the end and using my toiletries after I leave, but no way I’m walking on those floors without flip-flops lol

Potentially, but given its public knowledge most on social media would be aware.

More worrying, I know of at least 10 people who have both phoned and also emailed venue to get clarity (who are paid mbrs of venue for numerous years) and been told to email in and Managers will review and respond as reception staff are unsure of the exact position and only carrying out brief instructions (which makes sense).

After emailing in, managers are simply not replying therefore these members not visiting venue as lacks any form of appreciation for years of membership and simple enquiry.

Quite sad to see, and total mis-management on stance/compromise x

Film will get what they want in by hiding it in their pants or inside themselves, the same way they get controlled substances into clubs every weekend and have done from day one.

If you somehow managed to remove all the drugs from most clubs and at least pre club bars you would be bust in a few weeks, a huge percentage of your clientele wouldn’t bother coming to your venue.

In a gay sauna, that’s open round the clock especially at weekends, with loud dance music playing, private rooms, sex swings, porn playing on big screens……remove all the chemicals, again not actually possible, and the place would be shut down in no time as a huge portion of the clientele simply won’t come.

I’m not advocating for or against recreational drugs btw, just telling the truth.

Pipeworks are doing a bit of window dressing to make so people feel better and to kid themselves on they’re going to put a stop to recreational drugs btw use in their venue.

Folk will pay for a cabin and put the stuff in their pants to take out and use in private once they’re inside.

That’s how it’s always worked and always will.

Exactly, window dressing at best.

It will achieve nothing as far as preventing recreational drugs entering the premises, the same as full searches do for keeping drugs out of clubs, nothing.

And strangely, everyone still has a great night

When I go to Pipeworks I always have a rucksack. I go to my locker frequently for medication, food that I take with me as I have specific dietary needs due to health (they've always been happy for me to eat my own sandwiches etc). A top up bottle of lube, and dildoes of various sizes and a douche bottle plus sometimes a harness. If I need something from my bag I think they will soon get fed up with me going back and forward so often. What a daft policy. But punters are not daft and numbers will simply continue to drop, like they already have done. Oh dear. I won't be going back until this daft policy is lifted. In the past I've said use it or lose it. But now many can't! Many customers from well outside Glasgow go here for longer visits rather than popping in for an hour or two because it's local. But what a daft those further away customers will have to go to now. I know very well I'm not the only customer in this position.

The no bags policy doesn't impact me directly. I can understand from the comments posted how annoying it is for genuine customers who just want to take their bag in.

I went yesterday. Getting in and out through reception took forever. The steam room was barely functioning. The pool looked dark and not very clean. In general, the cleanliness of the entire place has declined. I don't expect it to be spotlessly clean but it's pretty bad. The locker area smelt vile.

There's a lot of newer staff. It takes time to get them up to speed. For the ones that have been there a while the general vibe I get is that they don't enjoy working there.

I would normally go two or three times a month and usually really enjoy it. But recently it doesn't feel like a nice place to be. I think I'll give it a miss for a while.

I don't think they tend to respond to feedback or criticism very well but I hope they listen to their customers.

I usually have a rucksack when visiting, but only really use a water bottle, which is emptied on arrival, but can be refilled for free at large container at end of the bar! Anything else could be put in my pocket including mints(used to be complimentary ones before ‘shop’ display extended!). Bags are tagged and put behind reception(take note or photo of tag number) so more room in locker for clothes. If new system keeps out illegal drugs and associated problems, perhaps it is not that bad an idea! I was told it was police ‘advice’?

On my last visit I found the standard of cleanliness to have declined markedly. The private cabin didn’t look to have been properly cleaned and the public areas weren’t much better. This new no bags policy is the final nail in the coffin for me. It used to be a great sauna but having no competition in Glasgow has made the owners complacent.

Went Wednesday PM and it was busy and fun (maybe saw some of you there?). The fundamentals are good. Place could do with a scrub, goes with the territory.

I wasn't affected by the bag policy, didn't have one, but it was slower getting in and out.

Can't think it'd be very effective at any drugs prevention thing. I'm not a user so unless I'm missing something wouldn't anything you'd take or paraphernalia fit in a trouser or jacket pocket anyway

I was more thinking that if that takes a lot of time with bags then something else slips eg takes their eye off maintenance/serving at the bar or if we're thinking drugs getting out from reception and checking what's happening

I’d agree with you on a few points here - cleanliness standards, especially at busier times like Sunday afternoon have definitely dropped, although tbf some clientele are absolute mingers and don’t clean up in cabins after using them, condoms left lying on floor when there are bins everywhere.

Don’t know how they’re going to cope during Pride Saturday when loads of folk will have bags as they may have been out all day/night, maybe have shopping bags so they’ll have to store all those PLUS they sometimes run out of lockers and give out black bags instead to store your clothes etc so they’ll have all those to store and manage too - staff will be tripping over themselves in the ‘back office’!

Allegedly this is acting under 'police advice' to stop d*ugs getting brought in. Can't really see it working and all it does is take up staff time and prevents the staff doing the rest of their jobs. Hence the decline in other standards. Basically they need more staff ALL the time but probably can't afford to pay them properly

Near Perth (not in Perth)

Of all the visits I've made to saunas and gay sex clubs and gay night clubs, I have never seen anyone taking dr*GS, nobody has ever offered me dr*gs and I've only been searched at nightclubs, and that's brief. I have of course seen guys that were obviously on dr*GS but it's not a regular occurrence and those guys are often shunned in such places. However, I have witnessed many times and been offered many times dr*gs use in many parts of everyday life! The latest was only two days ago, in a very dangerous work situation near where I was. But I couldn't do anything about it as he was self employed and would've been putting me in danger. I knew something wasn't quite right with him and about twenty minutes later someone else pointed out he was obviously high. The dr*gs reputation/stereotype against gay sex venues and social establishments, and the gay community, needs to be deleted and viewed more accurately.

"Is the no bags policy to stop alcohol or guys smoking T? Surely they could just let you put in a locker unless you’re taking a suitcase size bag"

It’s to stop both being brought in. They have lockers but they’re after you pay to get in. They’re now stopping you bringing any sort of bag past reception, including even carrier bags

The bag policy is just silly, since many have pointed out, anything illegal can be shoved in your pocket, or even underwear. The fact there's no secure storage is also worrying. Plus they've just bought a book of random wristbands, that you then have to photograph, as proof it's your bag, surely blank ones that they simply write your licker number on would be better? I know most people have smartphones, but there are some people that prefer a 'basic' phone, and sometimes students/visitors/tourists buy them instead of paying huge roaming fees. I wonder how you identify your bag if you can't photograph it?

Also, the place definitely needs a deep clean, and the steam room is definitely malfunctioning. There was a nasty aroma the second you walked into the upstairs 'maze' area, not just damp, but musty/shitty.

When I was in late afternoon Wednesday, I don't think it had actually been turned on yet, despite being open for a few hours, and the new door doesn't open/close easily which let's all the heat/steam out. The steam room has hone from far too steamy, with zero visibility, to now hardly any steam at all, and is actually cold.

Agree. They had some sort of dehumidifier thing or air conditioner upstairs next to the sling but it wasn't making it fresh at all. The showers upstairs the flooring is coming away from the walls and as you've said the steam room is looking a bit grim.

Some things can't be helped right enough - pretty sure there was (ahem) dirt on the floor of the showers next to the steamroom so on top of maintence there is also a clatty minority who are not helping things.

If you don’t photo the tag number with a phone, you can simply write it down. I always carry some old shop receipts or similar to re-use for writing things on, as phone batteries can go dead quickly!

Yes there are issues. How can one staff member possibly cope with dealing with entry, bar and maintenance? Quit the complaints, guys and enjoy the place. Maybe if guys were cleaner and tidied up after encounters...

TBF the place used to always be spotless. Need to also rbr it is one of very few in Scotland so we don't want to lose.

Hopefully if they sort out the bad idea of no bags and it can get really busy again and they will have more cashflow to spend on making it fab again.

*As a slight negative, be nice if they replied to the numerous emails they asked to be submitted on the bag policy over 2 weeks ago. Encouraged submission to management and failed to reply.

No idea why they have a public contact facility, I've messaged them a few times (mostly about Hogmanay opening) and I'm still waiting for a reply...

Technically yes, but realistically they don't want people sleeping, and now charge your locker key for another 'day' after 12 hours. Blasted over PA until you return to front desk to pay...

Oh that sounds positive. I guess in practical terms they’ve realised it was unworkable and too time-consuming for staff to administer and too space-consuming at busy times. Plus, the reality is it in no way prevents the issue it was intended to! I’ve certainly no issue with a bag search (although, again, that doesn’t really solve the issue of patrons bringing in drugs since they can just conceal about their person since no personal searches are done)

The 'no bags' policy has been abandoned, or the facilities have had a deep clean?
