Glasgow’s Image

Glasgow

Just back in Glasgow after a trip to London, and the contrast is hard to ignore. What should feel like coming home instead feels like stepping back into a 1990s dystopia.

The city has enormous potential, but it’s being let down by the behaviour of too many people. From pushing and shoving to littering and verbal abuse, basic manners often seem in short supply. Before blaming politicians, governments, or even the English, perhaps we should take a look at ourselves.

Cities are shaped by the people who live in them, and Glasgow is no exception. The architecture, history, and character are all there, but the image many visitors leave with is too often defined by antisocial behaviour. That’s a real shame for a city that could be so much more.

Anyone else feel the same after travelling to year 2026 recently?

Walking down Sauchiehall Street is depressing. Empty shops, litter, greasy pavements, people in tents and playing dodge the deliveroo rider. We seem to be regressing.

"Walking down Sauchiehall Street is depressing. Empty shops, litter, greasy pavements, people in tents and playing dodge the deliveroo rider. We seem to be regressing."

I’ve been accused of misogynistic attacks because I said that if someone like Susan Aitken says the city is clean, then I am worried. My point is not that she is of a larger size; rather, I am saying that she presents herself in a rather untidy manner, and when someone appears that way, I would not expect particularly high standards.

Glasgow used to be a nice city. Unfortunately, with places like Blue Lagoon keeping their doors open, pavements left greasy, the smell of smoke lingering in the air, chewing gum everywhere, potholes, uneven walkways, and kerbs that resemble Scottish smiles, I am genuinely saddened. We have become the shame of the UK.

People speak about independence and running an independent country, yet we seem unable to align two kerbs properly. If we cannot maintain basic infrastructure and standards in our own city, it raises questions about our priorities.

Only a politician would suggest we shouldn't blame politicians

Are you one?

Lack of funding causes all these things. Tax loopholes divesting money to tax havens, cause these problems.

So yeah. I'm blaming politicians.

The lack of funding doesn't account for antisocial behaviour and emptying the litter from your car onto the road rather than in the bin. I have returned here from a trip away, still in Scotland and cannot believe how much litter is dumped in the street. That is culture, basic teaching by parents means you don't do things like that as an adult, I've been homeless and still put rubbish in a bin so not anything to do with funding.

I’m afraid that you did not understood my point of view at all. I’m not a politician, but I’d do a great one. It’s not politicians fault people let everything in the hand of the services. It’s not the council’s fault people push and spit and vomit and throw their rubbish where ever they want. Please don’t change my subject to something that suits your narrative. I’m speaking about how horrible people in Glasgow have become, and how disrespectful to their surroundings they are.

"This post has nothing to do with the purpose of this site."

Neither has to do with the football, motorhomes, reform or others. Unfortunately, you see it has to do. Because a huge majority of men in here are absolute horrible people. The block button is an entitlement of the less bright, and the lack of the respect between the members of this community is something that I have never seen. I’m only pointing out that people have become horrible, unless you like it that way.

I’ve lived in multiple countries, and never seen a country where the government has to pay for people’s misbehaviour. In Europe, littering is a serious offence and any piece of paper on the pavement is highly fined. In Scotland people expect other people to pick their rubbish, the imperiousness behaviour of some people is beyond belief. Where I live, we tend to do rounds to clean the streets and yet some people leave their fancy coffee cups on the pavement for some people to pick. After being confronted, the whole behaviour changed.

"Buchanan street stinks"

I had the bad luck of picking up a friend at St Enoch Square. What a dump that is, and unfortunately that’s where most tourists will stay. What could be an amazingly clean and pleasant square for people to enjoy is full of pigeons, d*unks, drug addicts, and rubbish.

The problem isn’t funding (I’m always amazed how someone who can barely spell correctly talks about funding — oh, the irony); it’s a lack of vision from a council whose leader’s hair is greasy and looks unwashed. I don’t know if you’ve ever been in Meatloaf’s presence, but she doesn’t have good hygiene. How would you expect a city to look good when the person in charge has zero respect for their own body?

The issue in my opinion is that there are loads of issues

1. Business footfall and a sack of “good jobs” (I’m in banking)

2. Pandemic - working from home

3. Council investment - wasted on shite like cycle lanes

4. Lack of incentives for growth

5. Not policing the city centre from Ned’s, junkies and dicks smoking hash

A lot of issues are systemic, the waterfront in underdeveloped, the CBD is under resources for amenities. I thought the Barclays/SLC would drive development, but I’d assume the council wouldn’t do much to support as their priorities are elsewhere

It’s an absolute midden! Walk down Buchanan street and keep going to St Enochs. “Homeless” professional beggar in every door way, shitty buskers, d*unks, junkies that resemble walking dead cast, and serious need of a wake up call… it’s not clean, the paving and roads are a disgrace. Every street seems closed for resurfacing at the speed of a snail…

I personally think the bike lanes are important, more and more people using the bike lanes especially since Voi bikes came to town, that alone would declutter the city of cars. More and more people are using them and often see cars with only one person in them, not saying people are lazy, but lots of people would take the car to bed instead of exercising or taking a bike. Every city needs bicycle lanes, we live in 2026, aspire to be a modern city but it’s far from it. Thank god the meatloaf stepped down, let’s hope we’ll get someone with at least a bit of vision.

It is indeed, not to say about racial slurs I heard recently, as an immigrant myself, been asked to go back home plenty of times. Especially when I mention what’s wrong with this city. More and more people pretend to like it and love it as it is, just because they are emotionally involved with SNP, there’s no more rationalism, it’s pure fanaticism. And that puts the city where it is these days. Since December I changed 3 tires, that’s £1200,- out of my bank account I will never get back.

"Backward low achievers hold sectarian views and from what I understand there are way too many of them in Glasgow. Not for me!"

You’re speaking based on what you hear, you’re no better than sectarians who won’t do something due to their beliefs. Not visiting a city because rumours speaks more about you than about the city, Glasgow is in fact a great city and not everyone watches football, your perspective is incredibly narrow and labelling it based on some misguided assumption only proves that you are exactly the same as football fans who’d dislike someone on religious basis. Also, you made this about yourself when nobody really cares if you come or not, what you do is strictly your own personal choice, it won’t affect us if you come or not.

Used to drive all over Europe on a weekly basis but you knew the minute you started dropping down the hill from Lesmahagow everything would change. The low standard of driving and rudeness in the West of Scotland is second to none. People say driving in the likes of Paris and Milan or Barcelona is bad but they can’t hold a candle to Glasgow

I am not religious at all, people can do whatever they wanna do but honestly the amount of preachers is getting worse and worse.

I swear those “free Bible lessons” deliberately block entrances and sorry to get political but having a Palestine protests, “friends of Israel” protest, “believe in both sides” protest and then whatever random protest they have with multiple flags at the Statue just makes the whole street uncomfortable. I don’t even know what they are protesting half the time ?

Don’t forget about the communist tent too.

The irony of it being in the posh shopping area too.
