Been very close to having a meet but not sure of the right signals.

Had a car opening and closing his door.

Flashing lights or turning internal light off and on are recognised signals but still someone has to make first move. If the stop has entrance to woods or fields where the action takes place. Just walk into there and wait. Those inteteseill follow. Doesn't harm to rub your Crotch or bum as you're walking.

Always useful to have something in the car that needs to be put in a bin! Cans, sandwich wrappers et cetera. Gives you a legitimate excuse to go walking up and down looking for a bin? Can also be a conversation opener.

i wonder how he'd react to a succession of cars pulling in, the drivers getting out with notebooks, writing down his reg number, and taking pics of him?

You often learn by just sitting and observing. Look for head and brake light flashes. Open car doors. Continual circling of leaving the lay by and returning after a few mins. Often they'll get out of car and open boot or bonnet. Watch for crotch brushes and obvious bulges. Blatant is hop out of car and jump fence into hedge.
