20mph Fine

Well it finally happened I did 27 in 20mph zone and caught on camera. Now had letter advising me I will be prosecuted and to complete a form to confirm my details.

I've lived for past 30 years in England and when I've gone over limit there I just got a fixed penalty notice to pay a fine and get points on license or pay instead to go on speed awareness course.

So what happens in these cases in Wales?

Probably you will be offered a speed awareness course. Its not free but doesn't add points to your licence.

So the letter you have is just to confirm it was your car, you were driving etc.

Once they have your reply, they will send you another letter with two options. Either pay £100 fine and take the points, or pay £95 to attend a speed awareness course. Either way you will be out of pocket.

If you go for the course option I think it's 6 months to attend, but make your selection carefully as there is an admin charge if you need to change the date and I think it was £35.

If it's your first offence they offer you a speed awareness course (which you can do on-line via Zoom) for a fee, the price depends which company you select who does the course. Alternatively it's a £100 fine plus 3 points on your licence.

If it's a second offence within 3 years it's an automatic £100 fine plus 3 points.

Go for the course if given the option..it's a giggle and actually quite informative. I did one about 4 years ago and my hubby did one about a fortnight ago.

So can you hand on heart say you have never gone over the speed limit? Know someone recently was done for 23 in a 20, so easy to go over just that little bit.

Simplistic suggestion from a Little Welshlander. A lot of the 20mph restrictions are impractical an make no sense. There is a lot of talk about reviewing the policy and it could well be a main issue in next year's Senedd elections.

I'd hardly tell 27mph "speeding" ..but it was in excess of the limit on that bit of road.

I'm not disputing I exceeded the limit I was just seeking info on the fine procedure. There are 20mph limits in England too by the way. But they're more appropriately designated. But I am not even disputing the positioning of the one I was caught by. The whole 20mph issue is a different debate.

I did one years ago in England for doing 32 in a 30mph area. No point in arguing about the circumstances or right or wrongs of the 20mph policy. The people running the courses have no influence on the policy and are just doing a job. Better to grin and bare it for hour or so to avoid the points. Because frankly it's just too easy to take your foot of the brake for a few seconds and get caught again.

20mph makes sense in some places e.g. town centres, near schools, hospitals, play grounds, shopping centres etc but not approach rods to towns where there is little or no housing or industrial estates. Also it often makes no sense. I know of two very small quiet villages on B roads where the 30mph has been reduced to 20mph, yet another village, on an A road with a garage/mini-supermarket/cafe, has retained it's 30mph. Doesn't make sense. But, of course, anyone living in the Cardiff bubble wouldn't know about such things.

One or two have suggested you pay the fine rather than do the offered course. My advice would be the opposite. The fine and the course cost about the same. I managed to do the course online in 2023. Saved driving 25 miles in winter weather conditions to the nearest course centre. Big advantage of doing the course is you cannot technically fail it if you stick it out to the end. Also no points on your licence. If you do take the points you must inform your insurance company and that can put your insurance premiums up by around £100 a year for the next three years.

When these speed limits were set originally we were driving on crossply tyres with drum brakes and the stopping distances were part of the highway code

Now we have radial tyres discs all round and abs braking systems

The motoring world has moved on.

Highly populated areas, the roads outside schools hospitals should have a lower speed limit

Some of these twenty mile areas are just a cash making exercise

Guess what

Stopping distances have hardly improved in the last 50 years

MIRA have proven it several times

The main reason being , the driver behind the wheel

Yes I fell foul of one of those recently, 50mph limit on M4 when I researched it I found it's put in place for emission reasons! Considering it's next to Port Talbot steelworks which up until last September was spewing all sorts out is a bit of a joke.

I agree. We never asked for these impractical speed limits. They just seemed to happen. Very badly thought out.

As for the Senedd elections--exactly one year today I believe--I honestly don't know what the outcome will be. Worse scenario Plaid Cymru will form a government backed up by Labour and Libdems. In other words:-same old, same old.

Just to finish this off

..I got offered the Speed Awareness course option.

I understand the initial letter (actually 4 bits of paper..2 in English 2 in Welsh.) Was to enable them to identify the driver and check if they were eligible for the speed awareness course option.

It's just that from memory in England they assume the driver is the keeper and check eligibility before sending just one letter. So saving money. If you weren't the driver it's in your court to inform them.

"Cry harder" sees to be the smug buzz-phrase from the left now they have the upper hand in governments. The point is that it was an ill-thought-out blanket restriction. It makes sense in some places but not others. It also looks like it could be a major issue in next year's Senedd elections.

BTW I hope your bowels have recovered. Plenty of bowel calming medicines that can be bought without prescription
