"I am a camera, with the shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking" The opening lines of Christopher Isherwood's 1939 semi-autobiographical novel, Goodbye to Berlin, set the tone of the book:detached, objective ,journalistic.Isherwood lived in Berlin between 1929-33 and witnessed at first hand the final years of the Weimar Republic. He created a graphic and vivid evocation of the sleaze, excess, and decadence of Berlin nightlife, against a backdrop of economic hardship, unemployment, social instability, and escalating political violence,as communists and Nazis fought each other in the streets of the city.Isherwood's story brought to life a diverse and colourful set of characters: Frl Schroeder, his landlady, who embodied a bankrupt middle-class,financially ruined by the Hyperinflation. Her lodgers,Frl Kost, who worked as a prostitute to make ends meet.Frl Mayr,a butch, fearsome and ardent Nazi. Bobby, who eked out a living as a barman in a Berlin nightclub.Sally Bowles,a central character in the story, was a young flamboyant English nightclub singer, whose carefree,fun-loving personality embodied the hedonistic spirit of the era.Otto and Peter,a young incompatible gay couple,Fritz Wendel,Isherwood's Jewish friend who introduced him to Sally Bowles.Natalie Landauer a wealthy Jewish heiress, were all based,(very loosely),on real people. But beneath the glintz and superficial allure of the city's nightlife,a sense of impending disaster pervades the narrative-the shadow of Nazism, growing evermore menacing. The characters made flesh and blood in the story seem increasingly like ghosts, doomed members of a society that was soon to be swept away by forces beyond their control or understanding. The tumultuous events of these years, and the passage of time, have given the final days of Weimar Berlin a nostalgic veneer of glamour,an almost mythical status,This and the engaging, darkly ironic humour and vivid characterisation have ensured the story's enduring appeal.
