The Trial,by Franz Kafka.Josef K awakes one morning to find two detectives in his bedroom.They say they've come to arrest him for some unnamed offence.Thus begins Josef K's tortuous ordeal.In this case study of malign bureaucracy,Josef K struggles to navigate his way through byzantine legal processes,and to defend himself against unspecified allegations of criminality.Published postumously in 1925 by his friend Max Brod,The Trial was inspired by Kafka's own personal sense of alienation and was his response to the complex and opaque bureaucracy of Habsburg Austria.Josef K's failure to understand the nature of the forces acting against him,his frustrated demand to be allowed to confront his faceless accusers,and ultimately his execution,symbolise the powerlessness of the individual in relation to the modern authoritarian state. Anyone who has battled for justice against Officialdom in the form of local authority or national government agencies,taken on big corporate entities,or become ensnared in arcane legal procedures will be able to identify with Josef K's nightmarish predicament.Perhaps you aren't paranoid-maybe they really are all out to get you.
