Years ago when I was in the military, it was illegal to be gay and if caught, you would have been prosecuted and kicked out.

While it’s hard to hide who you are, sometimes I pushed my own boundaries. I remember one night in the 80s in my room watching TV with my absolutely stunning mate. This treatment was made illegal - not by any UK government but by a direct appeal against the UK government to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

I was an MO for 12 years and you'd be surprised at the high number of serving soldiers, sailors and airman, both male and female who confided in me regarding their sexuality. It was and still is shameful how the military treated those who were brave enough to be who their truely are or even worse those who were outed by their brothers in arms. The UK armed forces are the best in the world,over the last few years there has been a massive drive on inclusion, diversity and equality, I believe it is definitely going in the right direction,more can still be done. Gay soldiers are not asking for preferential treatment, they just and rightly so just want to be themselves. There is still a underlying stigma with regards to being a gay soldier- you're not manly enough etc, again you'll be surprised how many of our highly specialist troops have differing orientations, good luck telling them they're not manly.

ALL soldiers,regardless of gender and sexual orientation serve our country,serve with pride, unquestionable courage unselfishly and many have sadly paid the ultimate sacrifice. I hope that those now serving feel that they are now supported and can be confident that they can live their lives in whatever guise they wish without the fear of career fouling,rejection and prejudice.

Had to be very careful during my time in the army, 1976-1989, as illegal. If caught doing anything that might be considered gay you faced a disciplinary and discharge. We officers were just ordered to resign out commissions. The luckier ones got a medical discharge so no 'dishonour' or loss of pension rights.

So with that in mind almost no sexual activity. However stationed in Germany for three years it was easy to sneak off to gay clubs and have some fun. Amazed to find just how many squaddies went to such places and not just out of curiosity.

During my last year I did begin an affair with a young squaddie. Not sure how it started but we had great fun although had to be very discreet. We continued to correspond and occasionally meet up after I left the army. He also decided to leave and I had hoped we might resume our affair in civilian life but sadly we lost contact.

I was an officer in Germany in the mid-80s and the month before I arrived another officer had been summarily discharged for being gay, so that put a stop to any thoughts I had about exploring my gay side. The fear about being outed as gay was extreme, and everybody in the mess roundly condemned the bloke who was discharged. I left in the early 90s but I am still in contact with a number of mates, some who rose to very senior ranks, and, to a man, they remain steadfastly homophobic - the gay and trans acceptance training they are `forced to endure' is treated with derision. I am not at all sure that the full acceptance of LGBTQ+ is anywhere close to what it should be. But being a glass half full type, it is an awful lot better than it was. And I suspect that as the current generations come up through the ranks, sexually orientation will become completely accepted as an utter irrelevance. My kids generation (early 20s) couldn't care less who you sleep with, only whether you are a decent human being. Per Ardua

Tend to agree with you. I don't remember any of my fellow officers being caught and made to fall on their sword. However fairly certain some were gay or bi. Lots of gay jokes in the mess which some people would find unacceptable. Knew of 3 or 4 squaddies who got thrown out for gay activity. Glad it is now legal but do wonder how acceptable it is.

I tend to agree with Kilmarnock about the stem of homophobia in some people does come, at least in part, from them denying their own sexuality. But some people just are inherently homophobic - we are all wired differently.

In my time I knew the young officer mentioned before and also a long service Chief Tech, both of whom were discharged for being gay. Neither fell on their swords voluntarily! Really sadly, the Chief Tech had been quietly living with a bloke but they split up and his former lover threatened to spill the beans so he went to see our mutual boss and explained. My boss was absolutely appalled to have to charge him, but he had no option, and in very short order he was discharged with loss of pension etc. And for what? An experienced technician with over 20yrs good service sacked just for liking other men. On the other hand, we all (probably) knew our sexuality before we joined and we all knew the rules, it's just that the rules were bonkers at the time!

I think it depended on the unit and the individuals.

I was in the Army through the 90s and there was plenty of gay soldiers. Especially the women, early 90s at least 30% of the female soldiers were gay/bi and openly so - no one cared.

With the guys it was a bit different. My best mate was gay, most of the chain of command knew it as well but he was a good soldier and was discrete so he was protected. Most commanders would use their discretion when dealing with such cases.

Things are different now thankfully.

Like everyone has said being bi or gay was very taboo and hard for anyone caught, i know of a few who got caught and were instantly discharged. i served in the 70’s through to the 90’s I had a few mates who normally when they were d*unk would enjoy each others company fortunately never getting caught. One time me and one of the guys me mid twenties, him early twenties after a few drinks went back to my bunk for a few late night drinks some how we got talking about sex both very excited ended up in bed we had to be very careful not to make too much noise in case someone in the next room heard us, we had to be very discrete the next day when he finally left my room. That's terrible. Probably heard about it at the time as I was stationed in West Germany throughout 1981, although I don't remember. Being caught in a gay club didn't necessarily result in a court martial but it probably would result in a dishonourable discharge with a loss of all rights and privileges.

Much sympathy with all the military guys posting their own experiences on here, it very interesting to hear the experiences and the terrible consequences of being outed and decommissioned.

Many non military guys can also relate to the pressures of being outed and ridiculed at work for being gay, my experiences of the hotel trade were often similar. I found keeping quiet as a youngster back in the 80s was the best way.... Unlike several others who were sacked by management for being gay, no other reason.

Hotel kitchens staffed by teams of homophobic male chefs could be so intimidating and cruel.

We do live in different times and it's refreshing to see attitudes have changed in all areas particularly with the younger generations.
