He apologised for being late, explaining that his wife had been rather more demanding than usual that morning. There was something so casual about the way he said it that I couldn’t help smiling. Within moments, we were chatting away as though we were old friends reunited after years apart, rather than two people who had met only the day before.
What surprised me most was how naturally the conversation flowed. We seemed to have an extraordinary amount in common, from our tastes and interests to the little quirks of life that most people never think to mention. Every discovery brought another smile, another laugh, another reason to linger a little longer. It was almost uncanny, and I found myself wondering how two virtual strangers could feel so effortlessly at ease with one another.
Eventually, he offered to go to the bar and fetch us some coffees. As he rose from his chair, he reached out to steady himself, placing his hand on the inside of my thigh for a brief moment.
“Sorry about that,” he said, with a slightly sheepish grin. “A bit unsteady on these old legs.”
“No problem at all,” I replied, meeting his eyes. “In fact, I quite enjoyed it.”
I gave him a little wink.
For a fleeting second, there was a delicious pause between us, the sort of pause in which a perfectly innocent remark can take on an entirely different meaning. Had I surprised him? Amused him? Or had he detected the subtle invitation hidden beneath my teasing words?
Then came that smile again.
The same warm, mischievous smile that had set my imagination working earlier that morning. Only now, having felt the warmth of his hand against my thigh, I found myself looking at him rather differently.
He turned towards the bar, leaving me with my coffee-less table, a racing curiosity, and the delicious suspicion that perhaps I wasn't the only one enjoying this little game of ours.
I watched him walk away, wondering whether his smile had promised something—or whether I was simply becoming far too good at imagining what it might mean. There was something more to that smile, I was beginning to suspect. Something I couldn't quite put my finger on, yet something that stirred a curious warmth deep inside me. It was an unfamiliar feeling, a mixture of intrigue, excitement, and just a hint of wicked anticipation. I wasn't entirely sure what to make of it, but I knew I was enjoying the mystery far more than I probably should.
As he made his way back to the table, carefully balancing our coffees, I found myself watching him with a new and rather mischievous interest. And then I noticed it: the unmistakable outline beneath his shorts.
I quickly looked away, trying to appear perfectly innocent, though my imagination had already begun to run wild.
Could it be that his hand resting on my thigh earlier had been rather less accidental than he'd suggested? Had that fleeting touch meant something to him, too? And what, exactly, was behind that knowing smile he kept giving me?
Of course, I had no way of knowing. Perhaps I was reading far too much into a moment that had meant nothing at all. But there was something tantalising about the possibility that we were both quietly wondering the same thing.
He placed the coffees on the table and settled into his chair, that familiar smile returning as our eyes met.
I smiled back, determined not to give too much away.
Whatever his secret was, I had a feeling that discovering it might be considerably more interesting than I had ever imagined.
And suddenly, our morning coffee seemed full of possibilities. |
