No side effects at all here, and it's cut my cholesterol levels in half so win-win for me.

Muscle pain seems to be the main side effect for some though.

There are plenty of alternatives to statins.

Hopefully the admins will allow this link to the NHS high cholesterol treatment page...

Sorry pal - both “side effects” of getting older. Most likely nothing to do with statins. The most common effect of statins is that you DO get older.

"Everyone over 50 should be on statins. Good preventive medicine."

Bad advice, one reason not to trust forums!

Not everyone over 50 should be on statins. Some people will need statins some will never need them.

I heard from a cardiologist that if you get to 80 with no heart problems and are on statins then stop taking them.

Many people suffer side effects from taking statins. Muscle pain being the most common.

Not bad advice. Every adult who is 50 or older with at least one risk factor for heart disease should be on a statin medication. Statins are the gold standard of treatment for coronary heart disease, especially when paired with healthy lifestyle choices. If you have no risk factors such as cardiac disease by the age of 80 you don’t need statins.

The benefits of giving statins to everyone over the age of 50 would probably save the NHS money in the long run, owing to the savings in health care costs from the heart attacks and strokes prevented.

I now do these self-injections every two weeks. Has made a huge difference to my cholesterol levels. I was prescribed a variety of statins and statin alternatives and for me there were significant side effects, mainly muscle cramp and pains in legs to the point where I could barely walk, drive or sleep.

An excellent consultant endocrinologist told me about the alirocamb injections but had to get permission from the local Commissioning Group.

I got statins for my high cholesterol 7.5 and I didn’t notice anything. But I really didn’t want to be on them and for me, it was my diet which consisted of a lot of chocolate!! I mean a lot!! I have a very sweet tooth and would eat like 6 chocolate teacakes an evening. Half a bar of Dairy Milk hazelnut every evening and was eating bad stuff like a whole packet of Batchelors Super Noodles which are high in saturated fats. I cycle 5 times a week up hill to work and that didn’t bring down the cholesterol, it really was a change in diet. I hope there’s a way you can naturally.

Tried multiple types of statins and had same reaction, aches & pains, cramps(mainly in legs) and omg the dry itchy skin.

At the time was lucky to have bupa at work so saw a consultant (not a GP) & eventually I was put on fenofibrate.

This was what was used prior to statins, but whereas where statins wipe out the cholesterol, fenofibrate significantly reduces in. On upside no side effects after over 20yrs on them

Was prescribed statins about 10 years ago. Finished in intensive care on a dialysis machine for 2 days after they caused rhabdomyolysis where the muscles start to breakdown and the by-products knock out the kidneys. Apparently was touch and go and have finished up with only 40% kidney function. I know I am in a minority but have respect for them - statins are not like Smarties!

How do you know it was statins that caused the problem? Long term NSAIDs like Naproxen are a more likely cause. Did you take any other meds at all? Have you eliminated all other possibilities?

I hadn't atrributed the severe cramps I started getting and muscle pain to Atorvastatin, was thinking I must have done something while running, but there wasn't a correlation between the exercise and the pain. I had been asked by my doctor if I'd had a reaction to the statin previously and had said 'No' as I'd not had any swelling, rash, spots, nausea feeling unwell etc.

Have been told to stop for now to see if the symptoms change. As I was on statins for a while before this started it will take time for my body to recover. Cramps do seem to have stopped and the muscle pain is not getting worse. I assume it will take a while for the muscles to recover

It depends whether you are convinced about the link between cholesterol and atherosclerosis.

A lower cholesterol number may not necessary mean better heath.

As always do you own research and make a well informed decision about any drug offered.

Same here. I pay for a medical every year and my cholesterol, blood pressure and resting heart rate are all good. Then again I eat healthily and take lots of exercise. I’m not criticising anyone who takes statins but there are healthier ways of keeping cholesterol within limits.

That's fair enough but not everybody's cholesterol levels respond to healthy eating and exercise as I found out for myself...

"I’ve got high cholesterol and been prescribed Statins . Any other guys take them for cholesterol and what, if any, side effects did you experience?"

My Willy grew to huge proportions and I also became delusional.

Actually no side effects that I have noticed . But stopped taking them and have changed my diet to include cholesterol lowering foods .

In my view cholesterol does not cause atherosclerosis. I eat a high fat diet, low carbs and have ‘high’ cholesterol - not worried in the least as my triglycerides to hdl ratio is amazing!

Google it and do your research- I did and my doctor was stuttering around when presented with the evidence that he was completely unaware of.

This is just my view - not trying to convince anyone either way, just please at least read up on it, away from the fanfare of statins. More knowledge has got to be a good thing hasn’t it?

I don't think there is a definitive answer...yet. It may be a contributing factor or it may not, especially when you factor in all the other risks (smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes and more).

I did a ton of research myself and was absolutely tied up in knots with all the contradictions thrown up by studies. The one thing I did learn is that it appears to be easy to prove anything you like with statistics no matter what your agenda is.

In my case though, as I'm genetically pre-disposed to high triglyceride levels (familial hypertriglyceridemia), it's really difficult to manage them through diet and exercise alone so it just made sense for me to go down the pharmaceutical route.

As I've said, luckily I don't have any side effects and all my lipid levels are where they ought to be. Obviously other people should make a decision based on their own circumstances.

"Everyone over 50 should be on statins. Good preventive medicine.

The benefits of giving statins to everyone over the age of 50 would probably save the NHS money in the long run, owing to the savings in health care costs from the heart attacks and strokes prevented."

Is there some research been done into this or are you just guessing..?

Ice taken statins for many years with no side effects but the type was changed last year following a heath scare . But I do know of several people who have had different reactions the worse being foot related similar to another post mentioned. So like any medication you won't know until you try it.. but beware of ANY unusual symptoms and see GP immediately. I had severe reaction to a change in Blood pressure medicationnladt year but didn't realise the cause until I kept collapsing. Resulting in me having to surrender my driving license for a year. Now I am very wheary of taking anything else.

Doctors get paid to prescribe pharmaceuticals... pharmaceutical companies want you to stay on prescibed medications so they can make loadsa money! I use pro active flora or benicol spread... they have plant sterols that reduces colestrol (but not cheap!)

Hi there OP, I was diagnosed with high cholesterol in 2022. I think it was 7.5 or something like that. I tried statins, but didn’t want any side effects, so I started buying cholesterol reducing drinks from Aldi and drink one a day. I also cut out all the chocolate bars I was eating (ate a whole Dairy Milk in an hour). My cholesterol is now considered normal at 4.3 something. Maybe see if you can look at alternatives, if yours is not caused by diet. I wish you luck.

Although the direct link between high LDL cholesterol and cardiovascular disease is still in debate, there is no statistical doubt that statins improve mortality in patients at risk.

There is evidence that statins have anti‐thrombotic and anti‐inflammatory effects, and also a beneficial influence on how the lining of the arteries work. The plaque in the arteries is made up of cholesterol and calcium and other cellular byproducts. Statins have some direct effect in stabilising these plaques.

Diet and exercise can influence about 20-30% of serum cholesterol levels but the rest is really down to your genetics (and therefore your liver) to dictate what your cholesterol will be. Plant stanols/ stenols can have a role, as can other medications which can bind on to bile acids and encourage further new bile production.

If your calculated risk for heart attack and stroke are high, then there is really very low risk to taking a statin.

People who have taken a strong stance that they simply ‘will never take them’, without fully looking at the evidence, are being easily led by rhetoric, and a bit foolish and naive in my opinion.

They really do push them, and don’t tell you about risk of diabetes (itself a cause of heart disease) and links to dementia. It’s just easy to prescribe a pill and follow the ‘guideline’!!! Your body makes 80/85% of cholesterol for a reason, only the rest is diet related. So your body makes it for a purpose and then Statins hammer it down ….leading to issues!

We all want to reduce chances of atherosclerosis - reduce carbohydrates drastically and cut all junk food and seed oils - these are what leads to oxidation and inflammation in the body, contributing to atherosclerosis (in my view)

Take a stain and your cholesterol will be lower - job done then?? Well your brain and muscles NEED cholesterol (hence why the body makes it) so they will now struggle/… and if still eating inflammatory foods you’re still at risk of developing atherosclerosis

I can’t help feeling the wrong guy has been shot here! Cholesterol isn’t bad it’s the shit we eat!

As always this is just my opinion, please do your own research and look at both sides fairly and equally to make an informed decision when it comes to taking a drug (or not).

I have familial high cholesterol and triglycerides, which are not diet-related. The only way to keep these within acceptable limits is by taking statins and fibrates - this isn't just a

claim, it's based on my lipid measurements. I've already had open-heart surgery to replace a valve, two arteries and remove a lot of calcification, so I'm damn certain they are in MY best interests!

What's really odd is that no GPs seem to advise people that high levels of homocysteine in your blood are an independent risk for cardiovascular disease..

You need a blood test to check your level especially if you have ever had a heart attack or stroke. Safe level is under 14. When I had a stroke in my eye mine was 27! Drug companies contribute no money to this because they cannot make profits from it. Simply taking Vitamin B9 (folic acid cheap as chips) will reduce HCy. I am subscribed to have it for the rest of my life.
