I would love to have learned because sailing is a real scientific skill involvinmg aerodynamiocs (see later) but I have a problem with any water where I cant standup beyiond waist high! I had a bad experience as a child with a tragedy in a swimming baths and ever since water terrifies me. I hated going on the round the harbour trips on small boats on family holidays as a kid. I can just about put up with massive ships as long as I dont think of Kate Winslets tits......The odd thing is I have a pilots licence and height never bothered me! I suppose I could learn to sail on a very shallow lake but going out on the sea, not for me!

I haven't sailed for years, but I have sailed professionally all over the world, as captain and crew, if you can learn to sail in the Irish sea, north channel, st George's channel and the west coast of Scotland then you can more or less sail anyway

My parents had smallish cabin cruisers. As we got older, my brother & I each had several motor boats

My last 8 years, before retiring at 60, I was a coxswain on _ocal estuary Pilot Boats. It was like a hobby, & getting paid for it. I still miss the job, & I am 83 now.

I have always had the utmost of respect for maritime pilots, they're usually older guys and they board ships no matter the weather, in storms or calm seas, I have watched them waiting to board with the pilot boat pitching and flying up and down past the pilot ladder and thinking no way is he getting on then after waiting for the right moment, they just climb on like it's no biggy, experience is everything.
