I think you're underestimating the very real and justifiable fear many men have of being treated with hatred and contempt by their families and friends. You may think it's 2025 everywhere, but there and plenty of places in this country where it's still 1970 in gay terms, and about 1540 in much of the rest of the world.

Ancient Greece and Rome were, of course, bisexual hog heaven, but not necessarily what we think of as 'gay friendly'.

It’s a pity that society (and wives) can’t be more openly accepting of husbands who like to go with men, just as husbands might join a car club or go to football on their own. It’s probably a religious “vow” thing and a sense of unfaithfulness. Some guys get to their mid-fifties before feeling comfortable admitting to themselves that they are gay. Difficult to know how many bi and how many are gay.

That could so easily have been me. I had great fun with the boys at boarding school, including one I played with every few days for several years. But I just assumed heterosexuality would 'kick in' when I left that single-sex environment.

That meant the next couple of years were the sexually loneliest ones of my life as I waited, and waited. I knew I was gay from my teens (late 80's and early 90's). So frightening, scared and ashamed of who I was, I chose to hide the fact by joining the RAF and getting married. I chose a path that would be a smoke-screen and hopefully hide the truth. My wife was the first and only women I've slept with. Sex was random, never regular and eventually became a chore. Surprisingly we managed to have kids, and I love them and cherish them and wouldn't change that for the world. It's been years since we've had sex. on the surface, we live together, share the kids and do all the 'normal' things any straight married couple do.

Truthfully, it's a total head-fuck. My mental health is shot. I've gone from super-fit military guy to a chubby overweight guy, to make myself ugly enough, so she won't fancy me/want to sleep with me.

I know many of you will be thinking 'why doesn't he leave?'

The answer is that even now, I'm scared to admit I'm gay. I'm frightened I'd lose my kids and that I would leave a 30 year relationship with absolutely nothing.

So to any unmarried guys out there, on this site who are masquerading as straight when they are gay, don't make the same mistake I did. If you are a genuine Bi, then make sure your partner is fully aware. Just be true. I wish I had been.

You have to realise that the world has changed massively in the past 30 years. Back then, there was no internet and meeting other gay guys was so much more difficult, particularly for those living in more rural areas. Thankfully the world has changed for the better in this respect and people are much more accepting of gays. Even though I knew I was gay, I felt that I wouldn't be accepted as such, and chose to marry and live a straight life.
