The UK is on the verge of a economic boom. There are increases in retail sales and the economy points to things getting better this year. The same goes for the EU.

I wil

I am not mad, and am sure within 3 months I will be saying, told you so.

One of the most important factors to a booming economic future, is a positive attitude from the public. So please, all of you stop moning and try acting in a positive manner, for a change.

It will be the first time in nearly 20 years, that we can look forward to better times.

People have not stopped spending.

How they spend it has changed, so the impact on the overall economy is neutral.

Town centres took customers for granted, and now they need to create a different offer.

I spend virtually zero on discretionary spending. I have cut back on everything that I can. It is not a shortfall in cash that has changed my viewpoint but I am building up a war chest to protect me and mine as best i can. I am very much a Dave Ramsey fan, have been for years.

I certainly have less disposable income than I did last year and much less than 5 years ago. Prices have gone up massively in that time and my wages have not kept up. I doubt that I'll be able to afford a decent holiday this year, and I certainly won't be joining in any spending boom anytime soon.

I suspect that's not farmers (or not the big ones) - but contractors and farmworkers. Ancient landrovers are pretty thin on the ground round here - Hilux is a popular brand. Admittedly also bought by ex-Londoners overdoing the Country Life act.

If the country is booming it's because employers increasingly hire people on zero hours contracts with no job security, very few employment rights worth the name and no chance of progression within their employment.

If Britain is booming why is it operating 2,500 food banks (the highest in Europe), with Germany in second place running a paltry 975 by comparison? (Figures according to Statista.)

I don't know what your occupation is but I would guess that you are employed on a full time contract with paid holidays and perhaps access to sick pay and are comfortably remunerated for whatever it is that you do.

Many people to not enjoy any of those privileges and live a hand to mouth existence full of stress and uncertainty.

So it would be understandable were they to conclude that Britain is only booming due to their exploitation.

Firstly,I said on the verge of a boom. If we all take a positive attitude. That is the point of the thread.

I agree zero hours contracts are wrong. I suggest you look up the Employment Rights Bill, which is will address the wrongs of zero hours contracts and the inequality that it brings.

Finally, I am retired on the state pension plus two small personal pensions. I paid £700 income tax last year, you should be able to work out my total income from that.

I have not had a holiday for 6 years.

So please do not make inaccurate assumptions.

I’m no expert but my son runs a recruitment business and provides a service in the UK and the US.

The indicators are that there’s cautious optimism in both countries but in both countries there’s a shortage of skilled labour, particularly with AI, green technology and regulation compliance. The UK’s visa relaxation program will help that, although it’s a shame we can’t develop enough of our own talent to cover all the roles.

In the UK, the economy is improving slowly, but there isn’t going to be a boom in the next 3 months. I hope the OP is right though and I’m happy to stand corrected in 3 months time.

All sounds good to me. Closer ties to our nearest neighbors simply seems the most effective and efficient thing to do, especially given the volatility of our other option. The EU may be a behemoth of beaurocracy, but at least it is mostly predictable and won’t drive down food standards etc.

A deal was negotiated between two parties. In negotiations both sides offer something that is beneficial to the other side, that is what you have to do to agree a deal.

Our fishing rights; there is nearly zero ownership of the British fishing fleet, owned by British owners.

I belive over 80% of the fish caught in UK waters go to the European market.

Reasons for the sharp increase include a regulated rise in household bills. Water bills have increased. The increase in wholesale gas prices has come into play.

I've been waiting ages for the Benefits of Brexit to be explained to me.

Clearly, apart from a spot of positive thinking and a couple of verses of Land of Hope and Glory, we just needed Farage's vicious senile fuck of a mate* in the White House to nudge us into the Golden Age.

Inflation is taken into account in the retail sales figures.

specifically those presented in "real" or "volume" terms, are adjusted for inflation. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) in the UK, for example, publishes both value and volume estimates of retail.

I can recall the Tories trumpeting "record economic growth" figures. It was of course true, but when the economy's growing from an almost all-time low, that rather takes the gloss off it.

All hail our post-Brexit blue passport covers! However, that could have been changed at any time pre-Brexit - it wasn't an EU requirement, just a suggestion for uniformity across the EU area.

For clarity (although it had nothing to do with the point of the thread) I have voted for all the major parties in the past. I have not voted for reform, ukip or any other party, that I believe damages this country.

As for Brexit, it was and is harming this country.

The point of the thread was to get all of us to take a positive attitude, which will help, the green shoots of an economic revival grow.

Some of the economic growth might be down to other Labour policy.

There was an article recently about the older generation spending big on fancy holidays abroad, and other big ticket items.

Seems that recent changes in taxation policy have persuaded people to spend rather than lose out.

If it was planned it's quite a smart move by Labour, to push people to spend.

It might be a one time hit though.

How does encouraging people to take fancy holidays abroad (and spend their money there) help the UK economy. With respect I think you might be over-thinking it

A big chunk goes to the operators of these fancy packages.

I couldn't believe how much a friend paid for an eco holiday package. It was tens of thousands for the family.

But it could be wrong, just speculation.

Unless they've evolved to have wings they have to pay for flights.

Airports are massive employers.

I can't believe this needs explaining!!

They also said other big ticket items....which you know also contributes to the economy

Yes the Reform councils seem to be putting up council tax by the maximum amount.

Although I haven’t seen any evidence of farmers selling land. Maybe it’s the business men who bought it for tax avoidance.

I 100% agree. I said in another thread that Labour have made a mess of presenting their policies.

That negativity and the negative attitude of many persons on forums like this also contribute to an update in the economy.

Out of interest can you explain the attitude of the population that causes an economic upturn?

Not since Brexit.

Whats more likely is a slow decline into being one of the less well-off countries in the EU.

"Well you never see a farmer on a bike x

You hardly ever see one on a tractor either. They hire contractors for the actual farming. But the main gainers are their accountants.

Boom coming? PMSL.

Surprised you don't in rural Norfolk. Plenty of farmers on tractors around here. Plus driving around in ancient landrovers and clapped out pick-up trucks.

I suspect that's not farmers (or not the big ones) - but contractors and farmworkers. Ancient landrovers are pretty thin on the ground round here - Hilux is a popular brand. Admittedly also bought by ex-Londoners overdoing the Country Life act."

Ancient Land Rovers never die. I use my 1959 series 2 diesel to get get my papers every morning or my 1982 Mini Pick up. Both have their original canvas hoods. The key to old vehicles is storing them inside.
