Ex-RAF myself. I was born into RAF family in the 1970's. Joined the RAF after school. All I'd known was a military life.

I did my best to keep myself well hidden starting with basic training. Very difficult when you are in the block with a bunch of lads in their late teens and early 20's wondering around naked or just in their undies. With us all living in, all you could hear at night, was lads wanking in their beds, listening to the slapping of skin or the squeaky old bed springs.

I left 11 years before it became legal but was often a subject for discussion. Loads of homophobic jokes and innuendo. You just laughed along with the rest and, fair enough, some of the comments were funny and you'd have to be very thin skinned to be offended. Remember at one dinner a major stating he couldn't see a problem with gays in the army. He said that there were loads in already and they were often the best soldiers as they like attention to detail. He upset a few and I don't think he was gay or bi himself.

They were good instructors though and that is what is needed, I joined 1993 and still had crown immunity then so the army was a law unto itself, as a junior at 16 after a certain amount of time we could go to the NAAFI bar and buy beer but no spirits and couldn't mix with adult soldiers lol. It was always quite well known a lot of women soldiers were gay but I never saw anything going on in my whole time with guys, I kept it away from the army, when I was on leave, the weekends and never on camp.

The army has even gone soft now, lack of discipline. When I was in and anyone messed up they'd be charged or thrashed down the guardroom or gym, these days they get therapy and asked if everything is ok 😆! The standards have dropped big time, even the guards drill is awful now after seeing some videos of them, they'd all be given extra drill on a weekend till they got it together in my day.
