Don’t know. I remember seeing Lily Savage in the 80’s at the Vauxhall Tavern, and going to the theatre to see Hinge and Bracket in the Arcley Barnet Show. Or Tim Curry in the rocky horror picture show. And even Danny la Rue on the tv in the 70’s.

I can appreciate it as good performance - but sexually I find it a big turn off.

And there are other aspects I really enjoy.

Well said OP. Can't stand it either. A group of silly men dressing up as hideous parodies of women and bitching and screaming at each other and thinking they are entertaining or funny. Sad thing is if you are gay the great straight population--about 90% of people--assume you love drag. Nothing could be further from the truth. As for being an art form I fail to see it. What is artistic about making yourself look as ugly as sin and plastering your face with make-up with a builders trowel.

Yes some female impersonators--won't call them drag queens were funny e.g. Anny La Rue, Lily Savage even Dame Edna.

I think a drag act is like a modern day jester.

They can say things that others can not voice.

It's an over the top performance, but the good ones can hit home with a good line.

I knew quite a famous one here in the NW but only when he was in bloke mode. A really nice guy actually, and very well grounded.

I saw those too. The Trollettes were great entertainment too. Jimmy could hold a stage as did Lily Savage with their sharp wit. It all changed when people dressed up but just mimed songs to the audience. No engagement and it got boring.

Years gone by, with Dick Emery or Lily Savage, etc… was lighthearted, everyone laughed and clapped. Just done for fun and harmless entertainment.

Nowadays, these acts/individuals seem more interested in making a point, or trying too hard to be the next shocking wannabe-non-celebrity. Being entertaining is second or third priority. It’s about their advancement, not the audience’s entertainment. Tiresome.

Also, I worry that it does more harm, than good, to the LGBT community, as perhaps we all get tarred with the same “oh-look-at-me” brush.

Not really drag queens in the current sense as they dressed as two elderly ladies rather than OTT parodies of women. Their act was quite good. However, following their performance in a theatre in Hereford I got to meet them and wasn't impressed.

Further north at the same time we had the likes of Sisters Slim. Very very funny. Like pantomime dames on acid. Think lily Savage and you get the picture. Men badly made up as women just miming to other people's songs not a lot of talent there. Ru Paul's drag race I can take or leave

You've mentioned some of the all time greats there, talent that we'll probably never see again

Lilly Savage and Hinge & Bracket were not just drag acts, they created believable personas which were so clever that you almost forgot that you were watching a drag act

Danny La Rue was there glamorous side of drag back in the day, he could be a bit border line naughty but was always popular and suitable for a family audience.

The current drag acts use their alter egos as a barrier and disguise to deliver material they probably wouldn't get away with in their normal guise.

Probably their audience is more aimed at hen parties more than a gay demographic

I regularly watched drag acts at a local Portsmouth gay pub called The Old Vic. It eventually closed & now a restaurant I believe. Sadly one drag act had such old material I knew 90% of the punch lines.

Tegeingl, Gogledd Cymru

Drag is harmless, humourous, colourful entertainment in a grey world, an art form that combines comedy, drama, and social commentary to challenge societal norms and expectations surrounding gender and sexuality.

It's a platform for self-expression, advocacy, and protest, providing a safe space for people to explore their identities and celebrate human diversity.

With its global presence, drag is a unifying force that promotes self-acceptance, individuality, and inclusivity.

By challenging traditional ideas, drag fosters empathy, understanding, and acceptance, making it a powerful symbol of diversity and inclusion.
