"There. I've said it. I'm with you brother. The ones I have seen have been truly dreadful ![]() Don’t know. I remember seeing Lily Savage in the 80’s at the Vauxhall Tavern, and going to the theatre to see Hinge and Bracket in the Arcley Barnet Show. Or Tim Curry in the rocky horror picture show. And even Danny la Rue on the tv in the 70’s. I can appreciate it as good performance - but sexually I find it a big turn off.

"There. I've said it. I'm with you brother. The ones I have seen have been truly dreadful ![]() I saw those too. The Trollettes were great entertainment too. Jimmy could hold a stage as did Lily Savage with their sharp wit. It all changed when people dressed up but just mimed songs to the audience. No engagement and it got boring.

"Hinge and Brackett were a Class of their own Great Falsetto singing by Patrick and Piano playing by George Took it to another level " Not really drag queens in the current sense as they dressed as two elderly ladies rather than OTT parodies of women. Their act was quite good. However, following their performance in a theatre in Hereford I got to meet them and wasn't impressed.

"The drag guys in the eighties in London were fantastic. Trolletes , Phill Star, Lee Paris, Mrs Shufflewick to name a few. All were live with no miming. Great professional’s acts " Further north at the same time we had the likes of Sisters Slim. Very very funny. Like pantomime dames on acid. Think lily Savage and you get the picture. Men badly made up as women just miming to other people's songs not a lot of talent there. Ru Paul's drag race I can take or leave

"There. I've said it. I'm with you brother. The ones I have seen have been truly dreadful ![]() You've mentioned some of the all time greats there, talent that we'll probably never see again Lilly Savage and Hinge & Bracket were not just drag acts, they created believable personas which were so clever that you almost forgot that you were watching a drag act Danny La Rue was there glamorous side of drag back in the day, he could be a bit border line naughty but was always popular and suitable for a family audience. The current drag acts use their alter egos as a barrier and disguise to deliver material they probably wouldn't get away with in their normal guise. Probably their audience is more aimed at hen parties more than a gay demographic

"Hinge and brackett not Drag but in a class of there own. Patrick had one of the finest falsetto voices I've heard George a good pianist. A class Act. Took drag to another level " I think I'd make an exception for Hinge & Bracket. They were both very talented and extremely funny. Also they didn't merely caricature women.

"A recent episode of Coronation Street brought back some uncomfortable memories of Sunday night at the New Penny Leeds. It seemed compulsory to have someone in a wig miming to a crackly record of the Vernon Girls singing 'You Know What I Mean'." There was a regular transgender character in Coronation Street a few years ago, Hayley, married to Roy Cropper. Except that Hayley was played by Julie Hesmondhalgh who is actually female.
